Weird update problem
For some time now updates on my CentOS box had skipped exiv2. Yesterday I decided to do something about it, so I removed it - together with gwenview, digikam and, IIRC, libexiv2. That sounded reasonable, so I accepted the removal, then re-installed gwenview and digikam, which, of course, pulled in the two exiv2 packages. The version number of exiv2 sounded familiar, but I assumed that it

Re: FLAC to mp3 batch converter?
Christian, Sorry I don't think I was so clear with my explaination of what I am doing. Your requirement flac -> mp3 is really a special case of ripping, if you think of the entire chain.... normal ripping: CD -> wav -> mp3 Your case is [CD -> wav ->] flac -> wav -> mp3 Which is equivalent to: flac -> wav -> mp3 I need this too and am proposing to use a ripping

What's special about port 19842?
I've had umpteen IPs knocking on this door yesterday. The router blocked them, so it's not a problem, but why that port? Re: FLAC to mp3 batch converter?
Hi Christian, There is a perl script called rip (rip.sourceforge.net) that I was looking to alter for a similar requirment (flacs at home -> mp3s on laptop). I patched flac support into it for the encoder a couple of months ago. At the moment it uses cdparanoia to rip from CD but should not be hard to add flac as an alternative 'ripper' to make wavs and then you can use the encoder

Web server in a sandbox?
I'd like to understand better the sysadmin aspects of running a wiki. I don't have, and don't intend to at this stage, a web server, but I do have spare capacity on my LAN server box, where I'd like to install MediaWiki. I found this article: http://docs.fedoraproject.org/documentation-guide/en_US/sn-sandbox-setup.html Would it be straightforward to follow those

ssh -X not shutting down
Occasionally I ssh into my server to check something, and if it needs the gui I use 'ssh -X'. Until recently there was no problem. Exiting simply dropped me back to my local konsole. Lately, though, the shutdown seems to hang, and I have to close the session. Any thoughts? Anne -- New to KDE4? - get help from http://userbase.kde.org Just found a cool new feature? Add it to

rpmnew puzzles
I'm puzzled by such statements as diff /var/clamav/daily.cvd /var/clamav/daily.cvd.rpmnew Binary files /var/clamav/daily.cvd and /var/clamav/daily.cvd.rpmnew differ I thought the point of rpmnew files was so that we could check what has been changed? Agent 3.3 on Linux?
I dual boot WinXP and Fedora Linux and would like to run Agent 3.3 when I boot to Fedora. Has anyone successfully installed WINE (codeweavers?) on Linux and gotten the current Agent to function? What has your experience been? What problems have you encountered? I've seen very little discussion in the newsgroup. The web page that Mark Prince pointed to a few years ago is no longer active:

Need to test serial port connection
I recently bought a new UPS, and I''m attempting to use nut to monitor it. Following setup instructions everything seemed to go well until it came to testing the connection, which failed. There is just one serial connector on the computer, so I set it to monitor /dev/ttyS0. Either that is wrong, or communication is failing. I''ve been told to try minicom to monitor it,

gwenview WITHOUT nepomuk
Does anyone know how to make gwenview *not* try to use nepomuk? I liked it under 5.x, but in 6.x it *constantly* complains about things like tagging is not enabled... but won't open, when I log in, with gwenview running and showing the same picture I'd logged out on. Then there are the random crashes.... Don't need a "semantic" desktop, I know what things are, where they

Another security question
I would like to be able to check my bank account while we are on holiday. I know the bank's site is encrypted from the start - the login page is https and Verisign-trust encrypted - but is there any risk in using public wireless networks for jobs like this? It sounds secure enough, but maybe I'm paranoid.... Anne -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was

'Missing end of line'
For a while I've been getting this in my daily reports: /etc/cron.daily/logrotate: error: /etc/logrotate.conf:26 missing end of line It appears to originate from my CentOS server (though since client root mail goes there I can't be certain. The headers don't suggest client origin, to me). I've checked the logrotate.conf script and it looks OK to the untrained eye. It ends

Security advice, please
I run chkrootkit daily. For the first time I've got reports of a problem - Checking `bindshell'... INFECTED (PORTS: 1008) The page http://fatpenguinblog.com/scott-rippee/checking-bindshell-infected- ports-1008/ suggests that this might be a false positive, so I ran 'netstat - tanup' but unlike the report, it wasn't famd on the port. It was tcp 0 0 0.0.0.0:1008

flac metadata
So I've just ripped my entire 600 CD collection to flac format (200gigs worth) with vorbis comments in the flac metadata. But my gripe is that neither Winamp nor XMMS's flac plug-ins seem to have the ability to read the vorbis comment from the metadata. Are there any flac players for windoze or linux that can access the metadata? Or do i have to add redundant ID3 tags to all my flac
