How do I make the delimiter for cut be a single character with hex value 1e? I tried in a script file: DELIMITER='\x1e' DD=`echo $DATA | cut -f 1 --delimiter $DELIMITER` and it tells me: cut: the delimiter must be a single character Jerry

Hi, I want to connect to my server, run screen as root and then let another person log in a root also and let him run screen and attach to mine so he can "see" what im doing on the server. I haven't played with screen a lot but it seems a nice feature to teach him how to configure certain things. Sorry for the newbie question. thanks, --

[OT] Witty one liners or computer related proverbs
Dear All, I need some witty computer related proverbs or one liners that some of have used in the past as footers for your emails for example. I particularly remember a PERL based transliteration joke/footer that when run in PERL produces a witty output.... This is to fix a problem internally created by an over zealous salesman at my company pinning up A4 sheets with bullSh*t sales proverbs

Re: New Standard/Daylight time-change dates in rhel4u2 butnot centos4.2?
The laws already exist: Disturbing the peace, Misappropriation of public funds, Prohibition on unfunded mandates. What's lacking is prosecutors, judges, and juries who see the politicians as getting in the way of the statesmen and the people. To drag this back towards On Topic, it seems to me that the ntp folks might be petitioned to write up and submit to the Congress, a paper

wget
Dear all, It seems that wget version has had the -C (cache) option removed when it went from 1.9 to version 1.10, this happened somewhere between Centos 3.5 and 4.2. Does anyone know why the -C option was removed and how I can get it back? Other than regressing wget..... Regards Pete

"Samba-3 by Example" now available
Hi All, Thanks to everyone who has written wanting more information on when "Samba-3 by Example" by John Terpstra will be available. The good news is that it is available right now through your local bookstore or online sites like Amazon.com. There are already a couple of very positive comments posted to Amazon. These indicate that if you want to get Samba-3 up and running, you'll

Using physical disk in HVM
Hi, guys. I''m trying to use physical disks as virtual disks in HVM domains. But I couldn''t. I''m using cs10508 of xen-unstable.hg. When I use disk = [ ''phy:sda5,ioemu:hda,w'' ] in conf file, creating HVM domain says, I need to use ''file'' modifier if I use ''ioemu''. So, I changed it to disk = [

problem with swap and upgrade to 4 from 3.3
Dear All, I've tried to upgrade a Centos 3.3 installation to 4.0 using YUM and some instructions I found in a thread on the Centos Forum. The initial problem I had with Python 2.3/2.2 has been resolved, and now I am trying to upgrade the kernel to 2.6 prior to the yum upgrade, unfortunately it bails out at the end with dependancy erros on Xfree86. At this point I decided to use the CDs

CentOS 7
Greetings all, just wondering if anyone knows if / when there will be training materials for RHEL 7 (CEntOS7) available? The last book I was able to purchase was the study guide for the RHSCA / RHCE exam, (by Michal Jang!) Does anyone know if / when the next versions will be out? I'd like to go through it all with the latest and not "last years model" under my belt! Thanks!

Problems renaming files on samba share
Hi, I am now running Samba services to a network of 200 or so PC's accessing a central UNIX filserver and overall it is a success. There are just a few niggles however. I'll email my smb.conf later if this is required but I guess this may be a common newbie problem. Users all have a home directory mapped to their Z drive. This is okay, but if they try to rename a file (right click
