slow Perl on CentOS 5
If your Perl apps are unusually slow on CentOS 5, have a look at this blog:
http://blog.vipul.net/2008/08/24/redhat-perl-what-a-tragedy/
In a nutshell: some Perl apps are 100x slower on RedHat / CentOS 5
compared to other distributions.

alert function, V2
I guess the alert function is not part of the spec, because it appears
to be unimplemented in Dovecot, even though most clients implement it.
Timo, I would hope this would be easy to implement, and it's
functionality that will be valuable to every installation. Here's why.

Winbind problem?
I've got a Samba PDC and a Samba domain member server. I successfully
joined the domain, started winbind and run the wbinfo -p; wbinfo -t
tests, both succeeded. But if I do a winbind -g I only get
BUILDIN/group and if I do a wbinfo -u I get "Error looking up domain
users". But ntlm_auth succeeds.
So I'm a little confused. At this point this is a minor issue since

Bad .EXE file?
Hello!
I faced a very strange issue with wine. So I am trying to launch my beloved app that works under wine 99% good, but after upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10 I get this problem (extraction from terminal):
wine: Bad EXE format for H:\Desktop\Carrara 8.1
I get the same problem if I go to the 'hidden' wine folder and go to c drive and launch it from there.
any advice on this?
Thank you

difficulties getting coef() to work in some lmer() calls
I'm working with Andrew Gelman on a book project and we're having some
difficulties getting coef() to work in some lmer() calls.
Some versions of the model work and some do not. For example, this works
(in that we can run the model and do coef() from the output):
R2 <- lmer(y2 ~ factor(z.inc) + z.st.inc.full + z.st.rel.full + (1 + factor(
z.inc) | st.num),

XP Joining domain
I'm attempting to join a Samba 3.0.4 domain on a Debian linux box, with
a Windows XP client.
Problems
1) Can only get the join to work if I use the root account. On Win2k I
can use any account in the Domain Admins group.
2) The join succeeds, the unix account and the smb account are created
but the smb account is disabled, and the password contains all XXXXs.
Joining the domain works

Old hardware, newer kernels
I have an old server (old hardware) that's been running 6.4 with kernel
2.6.32-279.19.1.el6.i686, no problem. Except, any kernel update after that
causes it not to boot anymore. All I get is a blinking cursor on the
screen, nothing else.
Is this the end of this hardware, no more kernel updates after this?
For reference, these are all the options that kernel is booting up with

Wine and industrial communication like OPC
Hello!
I have some questions about Wine and how/if it can be used with industrial communication like OPC (MicroSoft Com/DCom objects, DDE and more)
My short question is:
Can I use Wine to make OPC communication work with a Linux system.
OPC "OLE for Process Control"
A "general" standard for communication in industrial systems, that unfortunately is totally depending on

Any tipps for a newbie on how to get the update done (if neccessary) ?

Question on server speed
On 8/5/19 3:00 PM, Jerry Geis wrote:

WHY? Why would you do that? What's the point of SSD if you reduce the
speed to USB? Or just use an old mechanical drive instead. Any issue
with that drive will show up as IO Wait - my presumption is that you
expect to see that so you're not mentioning it but it's going to

Legal issues
great info on the dna lounge site, but very
discouraging.
o, basically, we would not be able to do this unless
we wanted to pay a ridiculous amount of money.
we could keep it on the down low, but this kind of
defeats the owner's purpose for the stream, as he
wanted to advertise it so potential visitors could
check it out before they come.
is there no way to make this happen? (legally)

Once again somewhat mystified with exclude rules
I go thru this every few mnths it seems. Rsyncs exclude rules are
very sophisticated but because of that somewhat unfathomable at times.
Simplified:
I want to exclude directories named no_bak anywhere in the tree
but only the files under them, not the direcrories themselves.
My exclude rules look like:
no_bak/*
/no_bak/*
The first one does catch directories by that name on the first level

SWAT Bad Authorization!
Hi
Using 2.2.1a and getting 401 SWAT Bad Authorization error.
If I use the -a option everything is OK. The documentation refers to the -a
option which leaves everything wide open but I can't find any documentaion
regarding any other form of access control for SWAT. What actually controls
the access?
We installed from source with no selected config options.
Hope someone can help, I have

Security question
I've been googling for a while now and haven't found a decent answer to
this question.
How do I allow users to join the domain without handing out a domain
admin level account? Is there someway to limit what other domain
features this account has access to?
Thanks,
Derek

net ads commands work, wbinfo fails
Hi, all;
I compiled Samba 3.0.11 on Solaris 8 with MIT Kerberos 1.3.6 and
OpenLDAP 2.2.23. I joined our Active Directory domain, but only the
various `net ads` commands work, while any `wbinfo` commands fail.
Where can I start searching for this?
My log.winbindd says that the server failed to fetch the shared
secret. Oddly, it also says that it's trying to contact a Domain named

Samba 4 samba-tool dns question
Hello Everyone,
I am used to messing with bind zones directly. With samba 4, I cannot do
that. Is the following the correct way to add a TXT record for SPF to
the zone using samba-tool?
/usr/local/samba/bin/samba-tool dns add s4server.example.org example.org
example.org TXT "v=spf1 mx -all"
I am not sure it is because it is showing up with dig as "v=spf1" "mx"
