slow Perl on CentOS 5
If your Perl apps are unusually slow on CentOS 5, have a look at this blog:
http://blog.vipul.net/2008/08/24/redhat-perl-what-a-tragedy/
In a nutshell: some Perl apps are 100x slower on RedHat / CentOS 5
compared to other distributions.

alert function, V2
...alert function is not part of the spec, because it appears
to be unimplemented in Dovecot, even though most clients implement it.
Timo, I would hope this would be easy to implement, and it's
functionality that will be valuable to every installation. Here's why.
America recently had the tragedy of a shooting rampage on a large
university campus (yes, America should do something about the violence
and free access to guns in our culture/society). What was worse was
that, due to the lack of an emergency notification process, some 20+
people died needlessly. Now all college and universi...

Bad .EXE file?
Hello!
I faced a very strange issue with wine. So I am trying to launch my beloved app that works under wine 99% good, but after upgrading to Ubuntu 11.10 I get this problem (extraction from terminal):
wine: Bad EXE format for H:\Desktop\Carrara 8.1
I get the same problem if I go to the 'hidden' wine folder and go to c drive and launch it from there.
any advice on this?
Thank you

Joining the domain works fine from Win2k.
I've tried adjusting the Signing entries. I tried manually creating
the machine accounts, and I get a can't access machine account error on
login.
Any thoughts?
Thanks!

Old hardware, newer kernels
I have an old server (old hardware) that's been running 6.4 with kernel
2.6.32-279.19.1.el6.i686, no problem. Except, any kernel update after that
causes it not to boot anymore. All I get is a blinking cursor on the
screen, nothing else.
Is this the end of this hardware, no more kernel updates after this?
For reference, these are all the options that kernel is booting up with

Wine and industrial communication like OPC
...se same kind of OPC api for Linux then running a windows program.
Although I could have a Win program running in Wine on the Linux machine talking with the main app on the same computer and talking OPC to other machines that need that.
I hope Wine and/or you can help me in this case. It would be a tragedy if we had to switch operating system just because of this.

Any tipps for a newbie on how to get the update done (if neccessary) ?

WHY? Why would you do that? What's the point of SSD if you reduce the
speed to USB? Or just use an old mechanical drive instead. Any issue
with that drive will show up as IO Wait - my presumption is that you
expect to see that so you're not mentioning it but it's going to

Legal issues
great info on the dna lounge site, but very
discouraging.
o, basically, we would not be able to do this unless
we wanted to pay a ridiculous amount of money.
we could keep it on the down low, but this kind of
defeats the owner's purpose for the stream, as he
wanted to advertise it so potential visitors could
check it out before they come.
is there no way to make this happen? (legally)

Once again somewhat mystified with exclude rules
...selves.
My exclude rules look like:
no_bak/*
/no_bak/*
The first one does catch directories by that name on the first level
but this one flies right thru:
projects/no_bak/cdbk/
Along with all contents under it.
If I just use:
no_bak
Then nothing (no_bak or anything under) is copied. Not a real tragedy
but I would like to keep track of where the no_bak directories are in
the mirror too.
*/no_bak/* doesn't do the job either

We installed from source with no selected config options.
Hope someone can help, I have searched for info without success.
BTW access to SWAT via Webmin is also dead.
As many of you are in the USA I would like to add my condolences to all

Security question
I've been googling for a while now and haven't found a decent answer to
this question.
How do I allow users to join the domain without handing out a domain
admin level account? Is there someway to limit what other domain
features this account has access to?
Thanks,
Derek

I can certainly provide the smb.conf, krb5.conf, and lsap.conf files

P.S. FWIW, I have a Samba 2.x server (print-only) that runs fine, but I
wanted to do something "neat" with the new set-up. I guess it's true
what they say about the tragedy that generally follows the words, "Hey,

I am not sure it is because it is showing up with dig as "v=spf1" "mx"
"-all" where it should be all one string, I believe.
