ext3 versus Reiser
Greetings, I'll keep this as brief as possible: Is Redhat going to support ext3 or reiser (or both) in the next version of Redhat (I'm not looking for a commitment, just a roadmap)? I noticed (and used) the reiser utilities in the Wolverine beta (on a test box) to make reiser paritions, but upgrading to the 7.1 release failed as it only saw ext2 partitions. I understand that ext3...

Availability of unsupported kernel for 4.2 or compiling reiser into 4.2 kernel
Two related questions. 1. When is the unsupported version of 2.6.9.22 likely to be available? ?? I need to access reiser filesystems so I?m currently running on the .11unsupported kernel. 2. Has anyone successfully compiled reiser into the 2.6.9.22 kernel? ???I am getting errors in stree.c but I can?t find a solution on the net? Thanks Daveh

Xen and ReiserFS
I am unable to boot Dom0 on a machine with Reiser file systems. Reiser support is built into the xen0 kernel. I have similar setup with ext3 file systems working just fine, so I don''t think it is a setup problem. I have tried booting with and without and initrd file, booting with the original Linux distro initrd file, etc, but nothing see...

Ext3 vs. Reiser?
Hi! I was just wondering how Ext3 and Reiserfs compare. When I reinstalled my server (because of a stupid hacker) I took the opportunity to change to ReiserFS. And I have to say it's really much faster than Ext3. I don't have benchmarks, but for example, stuff like "make dep" on the linux kernel is much faster (even though...

OT: Hans Reiser arrested
http://sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2006/10/10/BAGERLM3RR15.DTL Link posted on Slashdot. I guess this may mean that reiser4 will never ever make it into the mainline kernel let alone RHEL/Centos

Possible bug with multiport?
...rors or warnings it just ignors the ports. The multiport invokation shows up in an iptables -t nat -L -v however. The packet and byte counts never get incremented either from zero. Any pointers would sure be helpful, having to include a line for every port check seems wasteful. File Systems - Which one to use?
We are looking at implementing a Linux box running samba in the near future with about 1TB of disk online. The purpose of this box will be for basic file and printer sharing needs. I am doing research on the different journaling file systems avaible in RH 7.3 and up (ext3, reiserFS, and JFS) and was wondering if anyone has had any real world experience with them (mostly reiserFS and JFS) and what you would have to say about them. I am mostly looking for cavets or gotchas pertaining to them. -- ---- Corey Hart Systems/Security Analyst St. Edward's University

Samba on ReiserFS
Dear Listmembers, I try to work with samba (newest rpm for SuSE, 3.0.1.pre2, but that does not matter, the effect was there in 2.2.7 and 2.2.8a too) on an sufficient armed system (the system does not matter either, I have tried it on different machines) using ReiserFS (version 3.6.4-12). When accessing one share from one machine (i.e. copying two or more files at a time to or from the share) then the transfer speed breaks down, sometimes the connection goes down (with the following failure: [2003/11/01 11:37:51, 0] lib/util_sock.c:read_socket_data(342) re...

domUloader Vs pygrub
Hi I have been using pygrub for most of the needs. Was trying out some stuff on SLES 10 SP1. It seems that it does not have pygrub!! On the other hand, they have domUloader.py which requires bootargs="--entry=hda:/boot/vmlinuz...., path to ramdisk. It is quite strange to be asking for the path of the kernel and the ramdisk to be supplied in the conf file!!. Am I missing something

what's the best filesystem
Curious what folks think the best choice of filesystem is, specifically when used for Samba and regular Unix users (SMB+NFS access). I'm using Reiser now but its slow and doesn't work good XP attributes. I've also used XFS (a couple of years ago) and liked it but had some troubles with cross-platform Unix and the extended ACLs. What's the preference today? Thanks -- Eric A. Hall http://www.e...

Recommended FS for Dovecot Maildir
Hi, I've heard that for Dovecot/Mailir systems there are filesystems that are optimised for the situation of many small files in one folder. Could I possibly have some feedback on what the recommended filesystems are? I've heard of ReiserFS but was wondering what other options there are and how they compare. If I get a good comprehensive response I'll build a wiki summary page out of the data gathered. Best wishes, Daniel

linux 2.4 vs 2.6 kernel
hi I read ( I think in dovecot wiki) that ext2 or ext3 fs on a 2.4 kernel can get slow due to the number of files in a directory. Does anyone know if kernel 2.6 has similar limitation? I'm not at that point now, but before the box goes live, I'm wondering if I should resolve that. Glenn

big file server
Hi I plan to set up a big file server, something like motherboard with 4 ide ports and an additional 4 ide daughter card, a PIV proc and 512 or 1024 MB ram, a 100 or 1000 MB NIC, with 6 or 7 200 GB ide HDDs in a sigle box. I don't need lightning performance, just disk space. Of course this would be served by some linux os and samba questions (relative to samba configuration and behaviour) :

Filesystem experience question was Migration questions
Doing a cursory Google scan on journaled Linux filesystems, it seems that the three ground-up journaled FSes: XFS, reiser and JFS all have their separate strong points but all compare favorably. Reiser does a better job with many small files...which would seem to be the reality of maildir formatted inboxes. Any comments on that? Any war stories, that is, any comments on reliability, availability and recoverabili...

Problem adding ext3 support to tomsrtbt
Hi, I am upgrading the tomsrtbt rescue distribution from kernel 2.0.39 to 2.2.20. Fitting a 2.4.x kernel on the floppy is not practical at this time. I am trying to support both ext3 and reiser filesystems. However, there are symbol collisions, it is impossible to use both. Is there any chance of getting the 2.2.x patch fixed? -Thanks -Tom

Do you happen to know if that applies to Reiser as well (i.e. does the Cox kernel quota system work with Samba/Reiser without a patch or do I need to also find a patch for Samba or use XFS instead of Reiser and then use the XFS/Samba patch??)? If I understand you correctly, then I would need to not only find a 2.4 kernel that has quota support (...
