"No disk in drive" "anti-piracy" message
Hello! I have just installed a legal copy of a two--disk game using Wine. The first problem when trying to run the installed game was "Anti-piracy protection: no CD/DVD drive found". It could be prevented by mapping CD directly onto the root directory of a new drive. But then the next message showed: "Anti-piracy protection: No disk in CD drive" or something like that. The CD was in the drive, though. The "launch.exe&quot...

A Sims Oddity
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=16664 As much as I am leaping for joy at the thought that i'll be able to play the Sims 3 without switching to Mac OS X or Windows, I have a question: 1. How would they know if the game works or not if it doesn't come out till July??? Also, I find it a bit of an oddity that The Sims 3 will work under Wine straight away when

SDMI takes break on portable players...
...les Times Saturday, May 19, 2001 Initiative to Bar Pirated Music on Portable Players Takes Break Technology: Coalition fails to reach a consensus on method for detecting unauthorized copies of songs. By JON HEALEY, Times Staff Writer The record industry's controversial effort to combat piracy by developing a new generation of portable music players has died, at least for the summer. The Secure Digital Music Initiative--a group of about 200 record labels, manufacturers and security companies--said Friday that it failed to agree on a way to bar portable music players from playing pir...

Distribute Rails app. without source code
I have a commercial software that I?d like to completely re-do in Ruby on Rails, as a web application on Apache. But I don?t want to distribute it with the source code. Is there any way to install/deploy and Ruby on Rails application without the source code? Thanks in advance, Jes?s Dugarte.- -- Posted via http://www.ruby-forum.com/.

[Fwd: Re: File formats (RE: MP4 Player Available for Download)]
I recall reading that all MPEG AAC software has different and incompatible file formats , because this is a condition set by the MPEG AAC technology licensing authority. Some kind of yet-another-anti-piracy-measure, the idea probably being that users of different software can not swap their files. I picked up this a while ago when following AAC software development, but can't remember exactly where. > I'm forwarding this to the vorbis list FYI. > I'll also forward the reply. &g...

How to make Vorbis popular
...people use it). Yet DivX 4.0 (which is only a marketing name, and has nothing to do with the "old" DivX), gains popularity day by day, even though it wasn't not used by anybody when it was first released. Is the only way for Vorbis to become popular to promote it as a tool for music piracy? Of course I understand none of the developers want Vorbis to become something like that. Comments? licensing bull; RE: Ssh into Windows XP?
...lace pushes my buttons. Imagine a microsoft screwdriver license -- that you will not use the screwdriver on any other screw for which it was purchased -- and MS convinces that makes of screws must sell screwdrivers with every screw they sell (since not doing so would lead consumers to screwdriver piracy -- using the same screwdriver on multiple screws).. etc. etc. etc. Then there's the idea of having to have a difference license for each computer *shell*. Hello! The OS is on the Hard Disk. Not in the memory (assuming the computer is off), not in the CPU, not in the monitor....etc. If I wa...

Cisco Support for 7940, Is this Right?
Hi all, Happy Wednesday! Got a 7940G off eBay to tinker with and, per the wiki, contacted Cisco about a service contract. Being just little ol' me, they won't deal directly and blew me off (I hate dealing with Cisco, Nortel, etc as a small-business person...) Again per the wiki, I hit CDW.com and found CON-SNT-CP7960 for $9.14. Looking for support for the 7940 (not 7960), I just

Digium G729 licensing - is it worth the trouble?
...urpise, they would not accept this. They required I sent them a letter explaining why I had to do this. Even after I sent it, they would not allow me to register the codecs. Finally they agreed, but the re-register did not work. After more calls, it still has not been resolved. I realize they have piracy problems, but that's their problem. I paid for the codecs, and I think I should be able to use them. People who are avoiding the licenses don't call you up to tell you. I don't mind having to call and let them know why I need to re-register, but I did not expect to be refused. So now I...

OW #10.08 - Offers too good to be true
...low the wholesale price. Microsoft declined to answer our questions and would say only that "we will not be able to confirm whether or not (web site).com is selling legitimately". We find that response to be disappointing but unsurprising. For many years Microsoft has 'battled' piracy but has placed the obligation on their customers to know if they are buying legitimate software or not. In this case it's pretty likely from the prices and method of delivery that the software is pirated - but if Microsoft can't or won't say whether it is legitimate or not - how do the...

Calling for 5.1 Mastering experience! (vorbis am bisonics and 5.1)
...a lot of the decisions behind the dolby >5.1 stuff are not mathmatically sound or even intutivly sane. IIRC it was to use as few bits as possible, w/o distorting the cheapa$$ speakers most people throw in the corners behind the couch with bass signal. (Mustn't take space away from the anti-piracy bits!). Another guess is, with a choice of only two from this list: A|cheap encoding| B|cheap decoding| and C|excellent sound| Dolby labs picked A and B. the chips to encode and decode dolby are cheap (and sound cheap.) 5.1 is also easy to cookie-cutter a design. Joe sixpack does not want to...

...chnology to prevent music consumers from copying CDs onto their PCs. The technology distorts CD recordings with a series of audible pops and clicks when the music is copied onto a PC. The Macrovision pilot is the latest in a series of attempts by the recording industry to protect music from digital piracy. Previous efforts have largely failed, either because various industry elements have been unable to agree on how to implement the technology or because the technology also disrupted normal CD playback. The recording industry's attempts to prevent the copying of CDs onto PCs presents a legal qua...
