-march=pentium2 + -mtune=pentium4 faster then -march=pentium4?
Why does GCC produce faster code using "-march=pentium2
-mtune=pentium4" on a Pentium 4 chip versus plain -march=pentium4?
Try it...
CPUTYPE=pentium2
CFLAGS+= -mtune=pentium4
COPTFLAGS+= -mtune=pentium4

Is it feasible to cross-build compat5x binary?
Hi folks,
I think we need to update compat5x binary to fix FreeBSD-SA-05:21.openssl,
but will the binaries built by ``make universe'' be identical with actual
build on Alpha, Sparc64, etc? (Yes, I'm volunteering to do the work iff
they are identical ;-)
Cheers,

puppet-dashboard load balanced report processing issues.
I just upgraded the second half of a two node puppetmaster cluster and now
I am having issues with puppet-dashboard report processing. If I have
workers running on both servers, they try to process each others reports,
but since the report data file is not there, it fails. I would have
assumed this data was local, not in the database. Does anyone else have
this issue, or have a suggestion

6.0-REL problems with ISA ed0, FFS corruption and ancient hardware
[ Asked on -questions on Friday; re-asking now on -stable without
cross-post]
I recently upgraded a 4.11-REL machine to 6.0-REL and have run into some
snags. While the installation from CD went fine, after configuring and
enabling my ed0 NIC, bad things start to happen.
FWIW, this machine is an ancient (hardware circa 1991, BIOS circa 1994)
dual-Pentium 133 MHz machine, with EISA/PCI and

tripwire port broken?
Dear list!
I've tried to compile
tripwire-2.3.1-2 port on
my 5.2 release. Two diffe-
rent tarballs have failed
with message, that port
was broken, all in one
sentence. No any details.
Well! Makefile has so-
mething like:
.if ${OSVERSION} >= 500000
BROKEN= "Fails to build inder 5.X"
.endif
One more:
USE_GMAKE= yes
Has someone compiled
it successfully? Is it

rsync breaks on FreeBSD without -O2?(fwd from grog@FreeBSD.org) PR 36998
Apparently rsync breaks on FreeBSD if you turn off -O2 (which is the
default.) The breakage is apparently inside zlib.
You'd have to think it was a compiler bug, but perhaps not.
I haven't tried to reproduce it yet.

Found security expliot in port phpBB 2.0.8 FreeBSD4.10
I think, there is a neat exploit in the phpbb2.0.8 because I found my home
page defaced one dark morning. The patch for phpBB is here.
http://www.phpbb.com/downloads.php
The excerpt of the log is attached.
I believe the link to the described exploit is here.

Best way to filter "Nachi pings"?
We're being ping-flooded by the Nachi worm, which probes subnets for
systems to attack by sending 92-byte ping packets. Unfortunately,
IPFW doesn't seem to have the ability to filter packets by length.
Assuming that I stick with IPFW, what's the best way to stem the
tide?

Reflections on Trusting Trust
or "How do I know my copy of FreeBSD is the same as yours?"
I have recently been meditating on the issue of validating X.509
root certificates. An obvious extension to that is validating
FreeBSD itself.
Under "The Cutting Edge", the handbook lists 3 methods of
synchronising your personal copy of FreeBSD with the Project's copy:
Anonymous CVS, CTM and CVSup. There are

First, I hope that this message is not considered flame bait. As someone
who has used FreeBSD for for 5+ years now, I have a genuine interest in
the integrity of our source code.
Second, I hope that this message is not taken as any form of insult or
finger pointing. Software without bugs does not exist, and I think we all
know that. Acknowledging that point and working to mitigate the risks
