Debate: Shall some of Microsoft R Open Code be ported to mainstream R?
...Builds from Duncan. I firmly believe that the R Community will benefit a lot from his work. However, the debate I would like to open is about if some of Microsoft R Open Code shall be ported from R Open to Mainstream R. There are some beneficts in R Open such as multithreaded performance: https://mran.microsoft.com/documents/rro/multithread/ Maybe, the R Consortium, and in particular, Microsoft R Team, could collaborate, if appropriate, in such duty. Thank you, Juan Telleria [[alternative HTML version deleted]]

Question about R developpment
...x. It is not fundamentally different from the version of R that you can download from CRAN but the binary builds offer some specific features: 1) The binary build is linked to the Intel Math Kernel Library (MKL) which may increase the speed of some matrix operations 2) Packages are downloaded from MRAN, Microsoft's time-stamped copy of CRAN. This can help with reproducibility of analyses that rely on CRAN packages. As far as I know, all of the additional packages that are bundled with MRO are freely distributable and also available from CRAN. As Roy points out, both Microsoft and the R Found...

Installing R 3.5 on Ubuntu bionic stopped(?) working
...e want to | enable container image builds that worked 6months or 12months ago to also | work today. This means if a user built a container with R 3.5 in the past You could maybe base that on the versioned Rocker container (the "r-ver" stack) which is also tagged to corresponding dates at MRAN. No support for binary packages though. Somewhat simpler but without MRAN tagging are r-base releases. These should still be at hub.docker.com: edd at rob:~$ docker images | grep ^r-base r-base 3.6.1 4e55790c88ae 4 months ago 642MB r-base...

Duncan's retirement: who's taking over Rtools?
Dear dev team, I was sorry to see the announcement of Duncan about his retirement from maintaining the R Windows build and Rtools. Duncan, thank you incredibly much for your 15 years of devotion and your impressive contribution to the R community as a whole. Thinking about the future, I wondered whether there were plans for the succession of Duncan. Is it the intention to continue providing

Installing R 3.5 on Ubuntu bionic stopped(?) working
Hello all, i am one of the maintainers of the open-source https://repo2docker.readthedocs.io/ tool. The tool builds a container image from a directory. Depending on what it finds in the directory it will install different software for the user. The focus of the tool is to make it easier for researchers to create environments in which their code runs and can then be used to share and reproduce

No problem!) which gets lost if we start using different base images. Or at le...

The Microsoft R team is willing and able to produce builds for R on Windows going forward. As Duncan noted, we've been doing this already for some time for MRAN. I'd love to hear thoughts from this community on what that might mean, and Duncan I'll also reach out to you directly off-list.
