Ice cream flavor metaphor in statistical computing
Forgive me, but since it's Friday and I've been thinking about command
line options lately, I thought I'd find out who came up with the name of
the --vanilla argument for R. From the svn log:

more cubes and 3d metaphoric objects...
hi
how about having more cubes to fly around in 3d space.
though at first thought this might appear unessacary as who needs so many
desktops?
So i thought, why not have special cubes (as well as the original cube of
course) and these special cubes, instead of cubes, be 3d metaphric objects
for specific tasks
such as a radio, or ipod or whatever for music
a cinema for movies

[R] Errors in "An introduction to R"
Dear Jarkko,
Thank you for spotting these problems and suggesting fixes for them! I
am forwarding your e-mail to the R-devel mailing list (removing the
R-help list, which is for different kind of R problems), together with
a patch implementing your suggested changes.

Teaching Models to Render Themselves in the Controller
I am trying to teach my models how to render themselves, i.e.
<%= my_model_object.render() %>
Let me explain my reasoning and proposed method before this gets shot
down as anti-MVC.
Let''s say I am writing a contact-management application. I have a
class Contact. I will need to display this class all over the
application. My first choice is to use a partial.
Now I can

Cups / Samba Driver Download question
Hey all!!
Sorry about the crosspost but this invoves CUPS and Samba issues.
[Samba 2.2.8 / CUPS 1.1.8 / Redhat 7.2 std]
I have encountered a small problem (which is due to my own slipup more
than anything else).
I have "Windows 2000" versions of the Adobe postscript drivers installed
on many of my 2000 machines. Now I am wanting to use the CUPS drivers
which are "Windows 2000 or

add a header to a forest plot (metafor)
Dear R-community,
I'm currently trying to assemble a forest plot using the "forest" function
from package "metaphor".
Works well. Even the regular "main"-argument works for adding a title to the
graph.
However, I would like to add one top row which explains the nature of the
columns. Very much like the usual header in spreadsheet programs.
For example:

SysVinit guidance, please
I have experienced a couple of power failures since installing CentOS 5,
both while I was working on the system. The first time, several weeks
ago, I thought there was some "feature" that I had never seen before but
couldn't really put my finger on it. The power came back on after a few
seconds and I never missed a beat. I also shrewdly forgot about the
anomaly that I had

committing multiple speculations in a single probe
While using DTrace to track down a problem recently, we came across an
unexpected restriction: the compiler will not permit different
speculations to be committed in the same instance of a probe identifier.
For instance, consider the following useless D script:
#!/usr/sbin/dtrace -s
#pragma D option nspec=2
BEGIN {
spec1 = speculation();
spec2 = speculation();
}

Hello,
I'm hoping someone with a wide experience with R may be able to see
what the program is trying to tell me.
I've got an array:
y1=rnorm(41,0.2)
y2=rnorm(41,0.2)
y3=rbind(y1,y2)
data11<-array(0,c(41,2,2))

wxruby2-preview Gauge and wx-sugar with SplitterWindow
First of all, just wanted to say big thanks for all the great work on
wxruby2 .. I''ve been a user of 0.6 for a long time and its proved very
useful over the years. It''s great to finally have a multi-platform, gem
installable ui toolkit that doesn''t suck!
Secondly, thanks also for wx-sugar. I was drowning in sizers and started
to write my own layout library ... but

I am a beginner using the sciplot package to graph barplots. I would like to be able to graph two x factors (Sampling.year and Period).

Period: First, Second, Total

The parameter "response" is the Average percentage

True ActiveRecord result set iteration
Hello,
For an internal project we were looking for a solution which extends
ActiveRecord by an iterator function. Using find(:all) is no fun if you
have to process some 10.000 records.
Until now there have been two ways of dealing with that scenario:
- write your logic a second times (e.g. use stored procedure)
- bet on AR plugins which work around that limitation by fetching IDs and

Programming puzzle...
Dear R guru's,
I'd like to sort the columns of a matrix according to the elements in the
first row, and in case of a tie according to the second row, etc.
In case of a 3xn matrix woppa, something like
colorder _ order(woppa[1,], woppa[2,], woppa[3,])
I just cannot seem to find a way to do this for a variable number of rows,
e.g. if woppa has 10 or 15 rows I now manually cut and paste to
