Ice cream flavor metaphor in statistical computing
Forgive me, but since it's Friday and I've been thinking about command
line options lately, I thought I'd find out who came up with the name of
the --vanilla argument for R. From the svn log:

Your metaphor is extremely strained, and completely unnecessary. It
doesn't relate to the reality of certificates in any way.
Without using a metaphor, please explain exactly who you think will not
trust these certs, because I have never met these people.

more cubes and 3d metaphoric objects...
hi
how about having more cubes to fly around in 3d space.
though at first thought this might appear unessacary as who needs so many
desktops?
So i thought, why not have special cubes (as well as the original cube of
course) and these special cubes, instead of cubes, be 3d metaphric objects
for specific tasks
such as a radio, or ipod or whatever for music
a cinema for movies

Hey! At least one +1 for "main" from me!
Also, on -1 for "trunk" from Arm.
I may have missed some, too.
I agree with Chris we should wait for Github, mostly because that

The tool metaphor is realistic. In my experience (which dates back to
the 1980s), email ist a powerful tool, and people need to learn how to
use it properly, with the appropriate software set. Especially in the
area of technical mailing lists I see no reason to cater to dumb MUA
software.

Teaching Models to Render Themselves in the Controller
...he longwinded message, but I felt that I should try to
explain myself as clearly as possibly with something that looks on
the surface to be a blatant breach of MVC.
In case I haven''t been clear, or maybe just because it''s in my head
and it''s late, here''s a metaphor I came up with:
Imagine paratroopers getting ready to jump out of a plane. As they
file towards the front of the plane, the officer hands them a
parachute, which they then put on and jump out. On the way down they
pull their own cord and parachute to safety. This is what I am trying
to do,...

Cups / Samba Driver Download question
...ly as printers can share files) with the same name
before an install form the client.
- Use a CUPS 2K only driver (which does not seem to be available as it
is not usually needed or wanted)
- Remove the old driver before installing the new printer. This however,
totally ruins the click to install metaphor that Samba and CUPS provide.
Does anyone have any suggestions or comments?
James.

add a header to a forest plot (metafor)
Dear R-community,
I'm currently trying to assemble a forest plot using the "forest" function
from package "metaphor".
Works well. Even the regular "main"-argument works for adding a title to the
graph.
However, I would like to add one top row which explains the nature of the
columns. Very much like the usual header in spreadsheet programs.
For example: "Study" "Sample"...

What had gotten my attention earlier is that the once-familiar banner
displayed on about everything except my room's ceiling was missing.
After some red herrings and blind alleys (hey, you don't have to worry
about mixed metaphors when you're an illiterate old coot!) I decided
that the missing banners and the fact that the power was killed while a
graphical page was displayed was what I saw.
Anyhow, it seems that these extinct banners were a function of the
/bin/shutdown routine in SysVinit because banners happen in...

committing multiple speculations in a single probe
While using DTrace to track down a problem recently, we came across an
unexpected restriction: the compiler will not permit different
speculations to be committed in the same instance of a probe identifier.
For instance, consider the following useless D script:
#!/usr/sbin/dtrace -s
#pragma D option nspec=2
BEGIN {
spec1 = speculation();
spec2 = speculation();
}

Hello,
I'm hoping someone with a wide experience with R may be able to see
what the program is trying to tell me.
I've got an array:
y1=rnorm(41,0.2)
y2=rnorm(41,0.2)
y3=rbind(y1,y2)
data11<-array(0,c(41,2,2))
data11[,1,]=y3
data11[,2,]=y3
rownames(data11)<-rownames(data11, do.NULL = FALSE, prefix = "Obs.")

wxruby2-preview Gauge and wx-sugar with SplitterWindow
First of all, just wanted to say big thanks for all the great work on
wxruby2 .. I''ve been a user of 0.6 for a long time and its proved very
useful over the years. It''s great to finally have a multi-platform, gem
installable ui toolkit that doesn''t suck!
Secondly, thanks also for wx-sugar. I was drowning in sizers and started

multiple x factors using the sciplot package
Dear R community,
I am a beginner using the sciplot package to graph barplots. I would like to be able to graph two x factors (Sampling.year and Period).
Sampling.year: 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009
Period: First, Second, Total
The parameter "group" is the different species I looked at. They can be seen in the legend.
The parameter "response" is the Average percentage

I''d be happy if our idea would be picked up and AR would get these iterator
methods integrated. I''ve seen lots of people asking for exactly this
behavior. It''s possible to implement, it''s easy to implement, and IMHO it
doesn''t break the AR metaphor.
If you like the idea and want to send feedback, please CC me. I''m not
