What is 'CPU' memory?
When playing WoW through Wine (1.3.6) my video settings are limited because some of them require "2G or more CPU memory". Another computer in the house can play in Windows with those settings maxed out on a graphics card that only has 1G built in, so the setting doesn't mean graphics memory. My computer has 5G of ram (32 bit PAE kernel) so it's not that. So what is CPU

multiple wine version questions
If I have two different versions of wine installed, do I need to install each program I want to run through wine is a separate folder, or will they both get the data from the one .wine folder in the home directory? Is there anything special I need to know or do before building the new version so that it doesn't mess up by current version in case I need to go back to that? The newest

Ventrilo crash error - related to winecfg error?
I have checked the db before posting and I think I have tried everything listed there. Using Fedora 11, wine 1.1.20 (newest in their repository except .23). All sound works - including in Vent until it crashes. Vent starts up, I can connect to a server, I hear the connection sounds, and then I get a 'had an error, shutting down' box and it crashes. Running from terminal I get: ALSA

Wine and PAE kernel
Are there any known issues with Wine on a computer running a 32bit PAE kernel? Google didn't turn up anything but I don't always pick the best search terms and would like to know what to look out for on a reinstall.

error opening winecfg
I updated my distro from Fedora 10 to Fedora 11 yesterday. I did not update wine because the version it wants to use is 1.1.23 and I remember several posts of people having trouble with either .23 or .24. All of my games and office/work programs run fine through wine, but the wine cfg window will not start up. I get: ALSA lib seq_hw.c:457:(snd_seq_hw_open) open /dev/snd/seq failed: No such

programs through wine crashing
I put a new video card in a previously stable system, no other changes. Now WoW, Ventrilo, and City of Heroes all work for a little while then crash, sometimes with an error message, sometimes without. System: AMD Phenomx4, 5gig RAM Fedora core 10 x64, installed from disk, fully updated Wine 1.1.14, installed through yum New video card: Nvidia geforce 9800gt, 1gig memory Current video driver:

keyboard input messed up in Wine 1.1.15?
I'm in Fedora 10 x86_64 and did a system update last night that included updating Wine from 1.1.14 to 1.1.15. Now when I play WoW my keyboard input is all messed up, I hit one key and get the result of another - example W,S,A,D keys used for movement will instead act like the space bar or esc keys, or the other way around. I try to type in chat and whatever key I hit acts like some other key,

Advanced Diary (a simple calendar/journaling program)installed fine, but when I go to run it the splash screen for the program shows up then I get an error box that says: Error Creating Object. Please verify that Microsoft Data Access Components 2.1 or later have been properly installed. The program stops there. A google search turned up this a download page for MDAC 2.8 here:

World of Warcraft - ATi 8.41.7
Hi, I was playing around on my laptop last night and installed the 8.41.7drivers from ATi, my laptop has an X1400 in it, not the HD2400 that the drivers were designed for so I understand some things may not function correctly and will cover the observations: 1. Pixels shaders+Vertex shaders - I have to disable these or I get missing elements from the screen, once tunred off it all renders ok 2.

list spam related question
In the thread "[Wine] New to Wine...and already in trouble..." there was a spam post by kizi that says it was "Sent from the Wine - Users mailing list archive at Nabble.com". Can people really send things to our list/forum from other sites/forums? It also seems odd that the reply directs a person to catch up on the thread by linking to Nabble instead of the Wine forum. It

Pulse audo in 1.3.25+
So I used to use the winepulse patch for wine. (Yes I like pulse). But since 1.3.25+ uses mmdevapi for audio, that patch no longer works. That author points to a wine multimedia git, however, after installing that I have no more sound in any wine application, and the winecfg test audio says audio failed. How do I get this new sound server working in wine? -- Sincerely, MacNean C. Tyrrell

remove old wine before updating?
I am currently using wine 9.22 and am getting ready to switch to the latest version. If I understand things right I need to remove my current wine before installing the new one, but I do not know how to do that. When I installed 9.22 I was very new to this and couldn't find instructions that made sense to me so I followed the directions here: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=243336

updating wine version?
I have stuck with an older version of wine because it ran everything wine-compatible that I needed and didn't give me any trouble, but the newest WOW update won't even let me into the log in screen and the only fix I have found and not tried is to switch to a newer wine version (although that seems to be crashing a lot for people, but that looks more like a WOW problem than a wine

games:COH/C in wine
I know that City of Heroes/Villains doesn't work in wine right now and I couldn't find much on the wine website that looked like anyone was actively working on it, but I am very interested in playing this game in Linux. I have zero programming skills, but I do have some free time and would be more than happy to test stuff out and give feedback and/or to hunt through forums and google

game - WOW BC installed and playing
Just wanted to let anyone that is wondering about the World of Warcraft Burning Crusade expansion that it all seems to work fine. It installed straight from the disks with no problems and patches worked fine with no work arounds. The text on the large buttons on the install screens is still super small and hard to read, but if you squint and tilt your head you can make out what it says. :)

404 error on Wine update (Ubuntu Hardy)
My automatic updates popped up with a new Wine this morning and when I told it to install it came back with : W: Failed to fetch http://wine.budgetdedicated.com/apt/pool/main/w/wine/wine_0.9.61~winehq0~ubuntu~8.04-1_i386.deb 404 Not Found [IP: 88.159.206.7 80] I'm not overly worried, I'm using wine 0.9.60 now and it's working fine, I was just updating because it was there. Open Office install
The latest version of Open Office in the db is 3.0.1 and it says to install cabextract before running the installer. The version I am downloading to install is 3.1.0, does anyone know if I still need to install cabextract first for that version?

WoW using d3d
Sharing this in case it is helpful to any other WoW players with the opengl issues or to anyone working on d3d in Wine. I've been trying World of Warcraft without the -opengl tag since Blizzard introduced their latest round of opengl breaking updates. I was very pleasantly surprised to find the game both playable and stable in d3d. I still have a couple graphical issues but they are not

fast WINE update distro recommendation needed
I am getting ready to reinstall Linux and am looking for a distro with a repository/package management system that stays very current with the WINE builds. Does anyone use one they can recommend? I am still learning and have tried to do my own builds to stay current with WINE versions but the process is still beyond my skill level and has failed horribly each time, so until I learn more I am
