PhD & post-doc positions available on Open source software evolution studies (incl. the R ecosystem)
Dear R-Sig-Jobs members, A PhD position is available at the COMPLEXYS Research Institute of the University of Mons (UMONS), Belgium (http://www.complexsystems.be/). The PhD position is part of a joint research project on "Ecological Studies of Open Source Software Ecosystems (ECOS)". This interdisciplinary project between biology and computer science aims to use software repository mining to determine whether and how selected ecological models and theories from biological ecosystems can be adapted and adopted to understand and better explain how open source softw...

How will fragmentation help Red Hat
Hi, As I found out yesterday, the fragmentation of the "Enterprise Linux" ecosystem just started to come true. I expect this is only the beginning and Red Hat may also start to completely hold back sources of non GPL software which is part of the "Enterprise Linux" ecosystem. I'm really wondering, how will this help anybody and how will this help Red Hat in the long...

Survey for framework and library developers: "Information needs in software ecosystems"
Hi, I’m Nicole Haenni and I'm doing research for my thesis at the University of Berne (scg.unibe.ch) with Mircea Lungu and Niko Schwarz. We are researching on monitoring the activity in software ecosystems. This is a study about information needs that arise in such software ecosystems. I need your help to fill out the survey below. It takes about 10 minutes to complete it. A software ecosystem can be a project repository like GitHub, an open source community (e.g. the Apache community) or a languag...

How to combine/join/merge etc PCA and Cluster?
Hello everybody, I Would like to get some help to plot together, Principal Components Analysis (PCA) and clusters. I am handling environmental data from 25 locations spread across 5 different ecosystems. When grouped into 5 clusters, locations from different ecosystems are arranged in the same group. So, I want to plot together PCA and Clusters, in a such way that locations belonging to the same ecosystem are displayed with the same COLORS, and locations grouped in the same cluster, have the sam...

Cross correlation in time series
Hi list, I'm working on time series of (bio)physical data explaining (or not) the net ecosystem exchange of a system (+_ CO2 in versus CO2 out balance). I decomposed the time series of the various explaining variable according to scale (wavelet decomposition). With the coefficients I got from the wavelet decomposition I applied a (multiple) regression, giving some expected results. The net e...

Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem API Wrapper
Dear all, I am pleased to announce the release of a new package named 'CDSE' on CRAN. It provides direct access to the 'Copernicus Data Space Ecosystem' for R users. With this package, you can efficiently access the imagery from Sentinel-1, Sentinel-2, Sentinel-3, and Sentinel-5 missions and process and download data from the R environment. One of the significant benefits of this package is that you can download the satellite data that is lim...

Legacy option for key length?
...ation to ?do the same thing. We're 7 years after their first results, and we now have access to massive cloud-based behemoths for a discount. How much time would it resist? The idea of removing weak ciphers from a widely used piece of software is a good one - that way, you strengthen the whole ecosystem. Going the reverse path would simply make less informed people be the weak link of the Internet, putting possibly many more at risk. Best regards, -- Emmanuel Deloget

[VOIP-Users-Conference] Potential subject for Friday - Does the Asterisk community need a 3rd party commercial software ecosystem?
Hi BJ, Further explanation about the 3rd party ecosystem question this morning Cory Andrews from VoIP supply was on the Voip-Users conference call last week. I asked the question - how much of VoIP Supply revenue is product versus applications - he said we don't sell any services such as ITSP hosted Asterisk so I replied that wasn't what I was...

V2.9.0 changes [Sec=Unclassified]
Hi all, Prefix: I am a frustrated Java coder in R. I am coding a medium sized ecosystem modelling program in R. I have changed to using S4 objects and it has cost me an order of magnitude in execution speed over the functional model. I cannot afford this penalty and have found that it is the result of all the passing-by-value of objects. I see that you can now safely inherit from...

prototype/script.aculo.us ecosystem
...ttp://errtheblog.com/) put up a nice post about jQuery. Putting aside all the assertions about cleaner code and fewer lines of code than with Prototype, the one thing that struck me from his (and others'') writing and from direct inspection is this: jQuery seems to have a more of an ecosystem surrounding it. That is, more plugins, widgets, locked-and-loaded functionality you can plop into your app. My purpose in writing this is to pose a few simple questions for discussion: - Why does it not appear that Prototype/Scripty have such an ecosystem of extensions (as do Rails and jQ...
