Dolby Begins Licensing AAC Consumer Encoder Implementation
Well, in the world of audio compression it's never boring... :-) Full press release from Dolby: http://www.aac-audio.com/press/aac.pr.0104.AACencoder.html My comments: Looks like Dolby will start licensing AAC encoder that targets consumers and the products they use like CD rippers, jukebox players, etc. Also, it looks like that this encoder will be Low Complexity AAC ("The AAC Consume...

Dolby pro logic and vorbis
As far as I know, LAME is able to mantain the informations stored in some audio files in the lower frequencies, useful for a Dolby pro logic decoder to reproduce a surround sound. Is ogg able to do it? Here is a link to what they say about "Other Formats"
http://mp3licensing.com/other/index.html They list: Atrac 3, (E)Pac, AAC ..and various patents of theirs they believe that these formats rely on.. then basically say: "We have not yet determined our licensing policy for this format" Vorbis is not mentioned.. Why so many lossless formats?
...hese formats all achieve approximately 2:1 compression without loss of detail. What I would like to know is where to go to find out the details on these formats. Is MLP documented anywhere? It has been accepted as an audio format for DVD-HD, so does that mean it must be openly documented? Dolby Digital AC-3 is documented as part of the HDTV specification, but it cannot be implemented without paying licensing. Well, a programmer could implement it based on the specification, but could not make a product without licensing. Also, what about Apple's Lossless format? Is this part...

Now - channel association/scheme, or whatever a more appropriate name would be.. this has got to be a lookup table, too. I'm thinking: 0 Mono 1 Stereo 2 Quadraphonic 3 Ambisonic 4 Dolby 5.1 5 Dolby 6.1 (used in Dolby Digital EX) 6 Dolby 7.1 7 Extended This is 3 bits, leaving one bit free for an extra flag, if needed, for one other bit of configuration which may be needed. We could also extend this to 4 bits, leaving many of them "Extended" for future minor version...

Multichannel files
Hi, As I´ve understood things, the Ogg Vorbis format supports more that two channels (stereo). Is there any tools to encode x sourcefiles into one .ogg file? I am a musican and am thrilled with the ide of makeing music in surround (or in more than stereo). This leads to my next question: is there (developing) any decoders for multichannel oggs to, let us say, 4.1 or 5.1 surround? Wouldn´t it

Why Point-Stereo at 160 kbps ?
Hi there ! I checked Vorbis' performace for mono files at approx. 64-80 kbps (it does a good job) and I'm wondering why the current OggEnc still uses Point-Stereo (>10kHz) for -q4 and -q5 I know, we're usually unable to percieve those phase correlations above 10 kHz, But a Dolby Prologic Decoder isn't. I think a future version of OggEnc which is able to use a user-selectable stereo mode would be graet. I think back to the time, where everyone just realized that the old L3ENC destroyed phase correlations using intensity stereo and thus being unable to handle dolby sur...
