Flame war police
Hiya everyone, Is there a way to disable a thread that has degenerated into flaming? The recent "discussion" on /var/run descended into some quite nasty places and perhaps a lid should have been put on it. This seems to happen every few weeks and is somewhat embarrassing when I'm trying to persuade people of the "active and friendly Centos community" It was a shame that

...IX design.? Liability aside, if someone doesn't like what the majority say on the list, that's their problem.? Trying to stick persistent data in /var/run isn't standard (or best) practice and, indeed, /var/run is literally designed to not be persistent.? Any sane admin wouldn't countenance that, and most of us are sane, and experienced. Let me ask, would you allow your kids to do something that was obviously dangerous?? This is the same thing.? We're here to guide those willing to learn the /best/ method of resolving problems. Some aren't willing to learn and refuse t...

...lam that square peg into that round hole, despite repeated attempts to explain /why not to do it/ seems to me to be willfully stupid (or stubborn).? I made my case in my replies that forcing this issue absolutely will result in lost data and few people who get paid to do this for a living will countenance such a thing.? In a lot of ways, we view things from the perspective of our own jobs/environment/culture, putting ourselves in their position as it were.? A lot of people join the list simply to get a question answered, a lot more hang out and help when they can.? I think no one wants to se...

Latest kde/tetex updates fail on my attempts. Is it me or ...?
...that I thought were from CentOS, tried rm -rf on the cache, tried "yum clean headers" and "yum clean packages" (suspecting temporarily bad mirrors?), etc. Reread *in toto* the yum guide again, googled for hours, which has caused the observed hazing of the cornea and glazing of countenance. The rhn config file is out-of-box stock, but I've added the extras, kb and such to the repos directory. All this has worked in the past. Caveat: I manually installed mplayer on the system before I learned enough to realize it is available from the other repositories. I've not yet cor...

Booting back into CentOS-6
...es this may break links etc. since the bios will have different names for the drives due to the different order of the boot media list in the bios. hope that helps, it is highly annoying. Error "singular gradient matrix at initial parameter estimates" in nls
I am using nls to fit a non linear function to some data. The non linear function is: y= 1- exp(-(k0+k1*p1+ .... + kn*pn)) I have chosen algorithm "port", with lower boundary is 0 for all of the ki parameters, and I have tried many start values for the parameters ki (including generating them at random). If I fit the non linear function to the same data using an external

codec negotiation
Hi list, I'm with a little problem on codec negotiation between a cisco827 and asterisk. My sip.conf is like that: [general] port = 5060 bindaddr = 0.0.0.0 context = default amaflags = default allow=g729 allow=gsm allow=alaw allow=ulaw ;disallow=all and cisco like that: dial-peer voice 6 voip destination-pattern 0T session protocol sipv2 session target ipv4:<asterisk-ip>
