URLS and Human Factors
This post addresses URLs generated by Ruby on Rails from a human
factors point of view.
Allow me to use Hieraki as an example. Hieraki is a great
application. It was one of my first introductions to the power of
Ruby on Rails.
Scenario: When I navigated to Chapter 1 of a book the URL in my
address bar was http://www.library.com/read/chapter/6. This

Enhanced Podcasts with Ogg Vorbis (Chapter Marks)
Hello list!
Since it is more and more common these days to create enhanced podcasts
(= audio files with additional chapter markers [1]), I am searching for
an alternative to the currently used MP4 format.
ID3 also puplished an official standard for chapters [2], but nobody
seems to use and support it.
Now I am trying to get something similar with vorbis audio (and maybe an

Chapter Numbering in Hieraki
I''m using Hieraki to do some documentation for RubyGems. So far I''m
lovin'' it.
But I have a question. I currently have three books on the site. It
seems that the chapter numbers continue from one book to the next. For
example, the first book has 7 chapters (numbered 1-7). The second book
has three chapters, but they are numbered (8-10) rather than the (1-3) I

Sweave / Latex per-chapter output
Dear R-help,
I am using Sweave and pdflatex to generate a large report from data
contained in my database (Postgres via RODBC). Currently, I work with
a single R/Sweave file, containing several "chapter" indications for
the Latex engine. My master tex file sets the document class, and
includes the introduction, the main Sweave file, and a conclusions and
reference file. I use a makefile

Feedback about Vorbis Comment Chapter Extension
Hallo again!
Some month ago we discussed about the Vorbis Comment Chapter Extension:
http://wiki.xiph.org/Chapter_Extension
I got some critics about this specification, especially from the VLC
developers:
see https://trac.videolan.org/vlc/ticket/6895
Some parts of it:

This specification allows holes between chapters and allows overlapping
chapters... And does not explain what to

video chapters and subtitles in ogg containers
I'm trying to create files that contain a video stream, one or more
audio streams, subtitles, and DVD-like chapter information.
ATM, I use ogm containers that can handle all this. But although ogm
is supported e.g. by xine (including chapters), it seems to be an
unofficial hack. Is that correct?
I'd like to move to ogg containers, since ogm doesn't support theora
videos. My final

Chapters
I'm surprised this isn't a FAQ, but I searched all over and could not find a
reference to it.
Chambers (1998) makes repeated references to "Chapters" in S (e.g., p. 6),
but I can find no reference to "Chapters" in R. Since Chapters were not used
in earlier versions of S, I'm wondering if R uses them or not. If it does,
how does one get them to work? I've

Comment Header - Chapters
Basically I'm looking for DVD like chapters to point to locations
within the file. I'd prefer this over having multiple ogg files.
Useful for long files, eg from live recordings, interviews, stories,
plays and so on. I was thinking something along the lines of;
comment[x]="CHAPTER=00:12:13 Third chapter"
comment[x+1]="CHAPTER=00:13:56 Fourth chapter"

Review of Black, Ruby for Rails, Chapter 4
As others have mentioned, Chapter 4 of David A. Black''s book _Ruby for
Rails_ is now available for download from the Manning site. The fact that
the book is being released one chapter at a time makes it easy to read in
small, digestible chunks. I never intended to review every chapter
individually here, but now that I''ve done the first three, I feel like I
ought to continue.

Would you mind expanding on what chapters are, and what you'd expect
to be able to do with them ?

Review Request: Samba-3 by Example Update
Folks,
Over the past few weeks the Samba-HOWTO-Collection and the Samba-Guide have
been significantly updated. Over the next 48 hours I hope to complete this
process.
Today I have added a new chapter to the Samba-3 by Example book (the
Samba-Guide). within 24 hours all mirror site should be hosting the current
update.
I would very much appreciate review of the new chapter 8 and the

Sweave / Latex per-chapter output
Hello to all who have helped me on this topic,
first I need to apologize for apparently replying only now... In fact
I use the "Pan" Newsreader to read the list, and I posted a reply to
the thread a week after your suggestions through Pan, and I only now
realised that the posting never arrived on the list although Pan gave
me no error message at all!
So, let me try again using the good

problem building dvi and pdf documentation on Darwin 10.2.6
I just installed R-1.7.0 on Darwin 6.6 (a.k.a. MacOS 10.2.6).
'make' and 'make check' run without any problems. 'make info'
builds with no complaints, but 'make dvi' and 'make pdf' fail.
I get refman.dvi and refman.pdf OK (with some warnings from
pdftex that some names are referenced that do not exist), but
R-FAQ.{dvi,pdf} fails as shown below. Attempts

serializable_hash and serializable_add_includes
I''m trying to write a helper method similar to attr_accessible but
instead it will be used to whitelist which attributes are available for
serialization (attr_serializable). My first attempt at this was to
override serialized_hash and modify the :only option to include nothing
but serializable attributes. I''m facing a problem when nested models
are ''included''
