install on via 800mhz box 4.4
I tried install 4.4 on an old Via 800mhz box. i386 of course. The installer dies pretty quick. I thought the via was i386 compatible? Is there something special to do. Jerry

Need 3.3v 64 PCI Booard with 800FSB (for ordinary Pentium4, not Xeon)
Just spended ~ hour googling - all boards are based on GC-XX or I750X Chipsets - all for Xeons. There also some boards for Pentium 3. Can someone point me to a board with 64Bit 3.3v PCI for ordinary P4 with 800Mhz FSB. Thanks

10-fold speed drop while transferring large files from Windows to Samba server
Hi All, I have a Linux box (P3-800MHz/196MB RAM/10GB+320GB) running Samba 3.0.22 server and a Windows XP (P3-800MHz/512MB RAM/200GB) client. The transfer speed (both ways) is about 5-7 MB/s when file is smaller than 700MB. For larger files there is a difference: when the Win client writes a file on the small Linux disk (10GB) the spee...

Speex latency
Hi, What kind of latency is expected using 8,16,32 khz? I am trying to do a realtime stream server, and I am having latency above >500ms ( I capture the sound using the mic, encode it and send it to the client). I am using ALSA system, a SB128 PCI and a 800Mhz P3 . What can I do to lower the latency? I tried a test : arecord -t raw | speexenc - - | speexdec - and I found that I also have a 500 ms latency. <p>--- >8 ---- List archives: http://www.xiph.org/archives/ Ogg project homepage: http://www.xiph.org/ogg/ To unsubscribe from this list, s...

Samba very, VERY slow ...
Hello ! I've installed serveral servers under Linux in my association with samba on it, without any problem. But, for the latest application we need to use, samba has to share about 800 borland data files. All goes right, but the systeme (P3-800Mhz-256Mo RAM for 8 users) is very, VERY slow (about 40 second to open the application). I've take a look at the system use, even when a client open a session, and : -> the processor is use about ... 3% (97%free) !!! -> Mem : 23Mo used...233Mo free !!! -> average load : about 0,01 !!! Via C3 and CentOS5
Hi, I have an Asus terminator C3 with 512Mb. It has a Via P3-800Mhz CPU, with a VIA chipset. It's currently running FC6. I wanted to wipe the machine and install CentOS5. It boots from the CD to the linux prompt, then it fully loads vmlinux, then starts initrd.img, and somewhere at that point it reboots. I have tried: noapic, noapm, noprobe. Same, somewhere...

Lockups with kernel-2.6.32-358.0.1.el6.i686
I updated my home server with the 6.4 CR packages, and I've experienced 3 or 4 hard lockups since. The server is a fanless VIA C7 "CentaurHauls" system with a 1GHz CPU underclocked to 800MHz and 1GB of RAM. It has a dual-port Intel 82546GB NIC in its single PCI slot. (It also has an on-board Realtek RTL-8110SC/8169SC NIC that is plugged in, but doesn't currently have an IP address configured.) This server provides a number of services -- DNS, DHCP, routing between VLANs, DLNA me...

core 2 duo motherboards and centos 4
from my googling around, it doesn't look there is a single motherboard that supports core 2 duo and works without patches or tweaks. is that true? the main thing we want is: core 2 duo support 4g of 800mhz (or better) ram sata gig ether with pxe boot we can live without pata or usb for a while. we've tried intel 965 and asus p5b based boards with various levels of ease of install, but all required some kind of driver update, which just isn't acceptable to us. well, i guess it could be ac...

I appreciate any suggestions that you may provide to an uber noob attemptiong to get his first server going. BTW does anyone know what a toshiba 3030r rack mount with dual p3 800mhz, 1 gig of ram, 6 18 gig scsi set up as a raid 5+0 setup would be worth, assuming its in good working order. Thanks again! cpuspeed problems with 5.2 and 2.6.18-92.1.18 kernel revision
...ing worked fine. Now, I discover that forcing in /etc/sysconfig/cpuspeed the governors and/or max/min speeds, it don't want to run more quickly. The laptop boots fine with the correct speed (usual speed), but when the init scripts run the service cpuspeed, the performance goes low: Only wants 800MHz!! Yes, I played with the documentation and the values on it, but the problem began before I touch them. I discovered the problem after upgrade the kernel (some weeks ago). Its very curious that if I power off/on or reboot the laptop, the next boot is with low speed, but if I power off, wait for 1...

Photoshop CS2 and Memory + Image Cache issue
Hi guys, I have a DUO CORE E8400 (3.0 ghz) and 4 gigs RAM (800mhz) Currently using WINE 1.0 and Photoshop CS2... My issue is how we can increase the limit of the memory ram in my Photoshop preferences panel under Memory and Image Cache from 2 gigs to 4 gigs RAM? It doesn't seem to realize I have 4 gigs ram? Cheers!

Getting better perf from multithreaded app
...o I've read in the FAQ). - SilkyPix is also multicore-enabled (it ran very fast using all cores on that machine when I still had XP on it). - But when I run SilkyPix in Wine it hardly uses one single processor. - Indeed the cpufreq daemon hardly ever triggers from its lowest speed, so it goes 800MHz instead of 2600. - I/Os stay very low (40Mb per image, one every 10s) so I don't think it's the issue. So my question is: how can I get better performance on this one app ? Or does wine dedicate only one thread per application, even if the app itself is multithreaded ? XP was 5~10 times fa...

My motherboard/cpu/memory seems to hang when rsync runs...?
Is this just because rsync gives it a work out? I may drop using this motherboard, since the store will not replace it, and thinks it's a hard drive problem, and the board has no way to underclock even as a test. What about changing from 1300 MHz to 800Mhz AThlon processor... think that would help an AZZA KT3 ABX motherboard work easier? John G Austex
