If you REALLY want to do this then as I state at
http://shorewall.net/shorewall_quickstart_guide.htm, I prefer a bridge
configuration for inserting a Shorewall box between an existing router
and one or more local systems. Unfortunately, a bridge is harder to set
up than the classic two-interface firewall
(http://shorewall.net/two-interface.htm). Most people find that the
latter can be set up in under an hour if the directions are followed
carefully.
