samba - Aug 2016 - Hyper-V Virtual Machines fail to start on Samba shares

no it couldn't in case of a *compatible* implementation which is 
essentail when you use more than one operating system

nonsense, all our developer desktops as well as our production servers 
are currently running Fedora 24 - with a customized /etc/resolv.conf - 
fileserver, webservers, nameservers, routers, wlan-ap and what not else

you only showed that you where unable or unwilling to cope with changes 
and learn how systemd works - you are free to do so - but then *please* 
stop spreading unqualified FUD

First thing I do when setting up a new workstation:

sudo apt purge avahi-daemon avahi-autoipd
sudo apt autoremove

I shouldn't have to learn how to use systemd, the old ways should still
work, but they do not. I would also like to point out that I am not
spreading, as you put it 'FUD'. I am only saying what I have found by
trying Fedora 24, there is even a bug report for the problem I found:

Lets be honest, what ever software I use, it shouldn't force me to
change how I set common things like /etc/resolv.conf.

This is getting out of hand and really has nothing to do with Samba, so
I suggest we agree to disagree.

if you don't want to use systemd find a distribution without it, if 
there are none over time because they all switch consider that not the 
whole world is the ghost driver :-)

you are spreading FUD proven by 30 machines running Fedora 24 without 
"systemd-networkd" and to be honest just because you hate systemd that
much that you don't look how to configure things don#t mean you are 
forced to anything

* nobody forces you to use systemd-networkd
* "systemd makes /etc *not* readonly and you pretended
   that like a fact - the opposite is true since enable
   or disable services as well overrides are using
   files and symlinks in /etc
* "systemd-resolved with ProtectSystem=full" is a completly
   different story than "mounting /etc readonly" and if
   you would be interested you would be able to clone
   "systemd-networkd.service" below /etc/systemd/system,
   just remove the offending line - something you can't do
   with other init systems that way

it don't force you - you can use "network.service" unchanged and
just
type "systemctl disable systemd-networkd.service; systemctl mask 
systemd-networkd.service"

it's not about agree or disagree - you just don't like systemd, hence 
you did not look close how it works, that's fine, but then don't talk 
about things you haven't a clue because you are not interested in them
