A number of years back it became necessary to limit the size of messages that could be posted to the samba mailing list. The current limit is 64 KBytes. While it continues be be desirable to block large spam messages, I believe it is time to ask current subscribers for their preferences. This list is here to serve the wishes and needs of our subscribers. We wonder if the time is right to review the size limit of messages that can be sent to this list. Please help us to understand your wishes. What size limit should we observe for messages to this list? 1) 64 KBytes 2) 128 KBytes 3) 256 KBytes 4) 512 KBytes 5) 1 MByte 6) 2 MBytes 7) Any size Please indicate your preference by reply to this list. Thanks. - John T. List moderator

Death by a million feathers. If people want to send huge attachments (painful, but sometimes the only way to get something out quickly) 512K seems that it would accommodate most needs? --STeve Andre'
Quoting John H Terpstra - Samba Team <jht at samba.org>:> What size limit should we observe for messages to this list? > > 1) 64 KBytesI would hope that larger files would be compressed and put on an ftp/web server. Or send as attachments to individuals on request.

Those who wish to share more should upload it somewhere and provide a URL to the upload in their list mail so that those who actually care about that particular large item can load it when they choose, and likely in a browser instead of an email agent. Offers to email large attachments privately could be encouraged as well. -- No Jesus - No peace , Know Jesus - Know Peace Team OS/2 ** Reg. Linux User #211409 Felix Miata *** http://fm.no-ip.com/
I think 64kb is a fine limit. pastebin.com and other sites like it are a very good way to handle large files. > What size limit should we observe for messages to this list? > > 1) 64 KBytesThere is a 40K limit on the two lists (ivtv-users and ivtv-devel) that I moderate and I consider this a pretty good limit for most emails. I usually let a message through if the user is just above otherwise I instruct him/her to either compress the attachment or post it somewhere and provide a link. -- John M. Drescher

So 64KB is 13 pages, I know I don't want to read a 13 page message. :)

Hallo, John, Du meintest am 22.07.09:> What size limit should we observe for messages to this list?> 1) 64 KBytesOr the traditional 40 kBytes Longer parts should be presented somewhere on a webside. And no HTML - please! Sometimes I get my mail per ISDN - then long mail is ugly. Viele Gruesse! Helmut

They probably top-posted anyway... -- 73, Ged.
