samba - Jun 2007 - Multiple Backends No Longer Supported

Dear Help,

I have discovered the fact that since 3.0.23, multiple backends 
cannot bedefined by the passdb backend directive in smb.conf.  
I am currently using version 3.0.25 on AIX 5.3.  Does anyone 
know of a way to use more than one backend?

The reason I ask is because we currently have Samba set up 
authenticating locally (with a large number of users), and we'd like 
to move to LDAP authentication.  However, we'd like to make it a 
gradual process, doing a group of users at a time.  Without supporting 
multiple backends, I'm not sure how toaccomplish this.

Any thoughts, advice and/or help would be greatly appreciated.

In addition, this server will be set up as a Domain Member (security=domain).

There's an external project, pdbsql, that aims to provide this
functionality:
