Hi, especially John H. T :)
I'm yet again plodding through chapter 14 of the
Samba-HOWTO-Collection.pdf. Not because I can't make what's in it work
for me, I did that long ago, I found out for myself, because a great
deal of what's in it is wrong. I just got fed up with trying to get
Nagios to work - I gave up, for various reasons and started on the Samba
doco.
At the risk of being accused of biting the hand that feeds me, I'd like
to suggest the following for chapter 14 of Samba-HOWTO-Collection.pdf :
- That every single instance of Windows point-'n-click is reviewed. Many
of the step-wise instructions are simply not valid. At least, they
aren't for my XP Pro ws;
- "The first thing to note is that the Add button will not return a
list of users in Samba, it will give an error message saying 'The remote
procedure call failed and did not execute'). Well, it doesn't (I have
ACLs) and I can add whatever users or groups I want and remove whichever
I want, as well as changing their permissions, right enough by entering
their names, but there's no RPC error.
I only write this, because (I found when I started) that it was hard
enough to get my head around Samba as it was, without having to apply
rules of Calvinistic theology to the whole thing. When all's said and
done, Samba (especially most of the latest versions) is a fascinating,
flexible, highly useful and dependable tool.
Thanks!
