Remove the machines from the domain, making sure you the machine account is
deleted from samba and Linux. Change the name then re-join. I have found
that sometimes a machine will not re-join the Samba domain; you can try to
restart the smb service, but if that fails you will need to rebuild the XP
machine. Only seems to happen with XP machines.
Hope this helps

Subject: [Samba] Can't join domain - new machine name
I have just implemented an NT Domain using samba 3.0.4 on Slackware 9.1,
a very simple LAN with 4 or 5 clients. Clients: Win XP Pro.
Everything looks OK so far, apart from this issue:
I create machine accounts for existing client machines using their
existing names ... works fine, they can join domain.
Except that we want to rename the existing machines using a new
consistent format (client1, client2, etc)
If I create new machine accounts then try to join the existing client
machines to the domain using the new names (ie I'm trying to change the
clients name at the same time as I join it to the domain), I get an
error about an RPC call failing.
Any ideas?
Thanks
