This is from my winbindd log file,Yes it's a bug. What would really help is a stack backtrace from a winbindd compiled with -g stuck on a panic action (see the smb.conf manpage for this parameter). Thanks, Jeremy.
Hi, I haven't been able to work out how to capture the backtrace, I've installed winbind with debug compiled and also gdbm. That often doesn't quite work right, and so you can define up the [realms] section of your krb5.conf to give the krb5 libs a better idea. (Even if that fixes it, we still really want to see the backtrace). Hi, please find attatched the back trace from my winbindd (samba 3.0.0) panic, thanks Andy Smith. -----Original Message----- From: Andrew Bartlett [mailto:abartlet@samba.org] Sent: 12 November 2003 00:12 To: ww m-pubsyssamba Cc: samba@lists.samba.org Subject: RE: [Samba] RE: winbindd panic daemon dies On Wed, 2003-11-12 at 01:00, ww m-pubsyssamba wrote:> Hi, > > I haven't been able to work out how to capture the backtrace, > I've installed winbind with debug compiled and also gdbm.I hope you mean gdb - the GNU Debugger, not the database :-)> I get the output shown below, what do I need to do next?If you look in the manpage for smb.conf, you can setup a 'panic action'. This can do anything from popping up gdb in an xterm to mailing you a backtrace. The example in the smb.conf is panic action = "/bin/sleep 90000" This makes winbind just hang in there, so you can attach the debugger Then you can attach gdb in the normal way: gdb /path/to/samba/winbind 2348 where 2348 is the pid of the near-dead winbindd. Run 'bt full' and give us the result. I had the same problem last night using 3.0.0-1 on RH 9. It is connecting via a slow link and seemed to panic when we started pushing a nightly backup across the link. I can run valgrind on it if that would help. Was the stock RPM compiled with debug? regards Stephen Collier [2003/11/25 20:22:18, 1] libads/ldap_utils.c:ads_do_search_retry(68) ads_search_retry: failed to reconnect (Timed out) [2003/11/25 20:22:18, 0] lib/fault.c:fault_report(36) ==============================================================[2003/11/25 20:22:18, 0] lib/fault.c:fault_report(37) INTERNAL ERROR: Signal 11 in pid 17852 (3.0.0) Please read the appendix Bugs of the Samba HOWTO collection [2003/11/25 20:22:18, 0] lib/fault.c:fault_report(39) ==============================================================[2003/11/25 20:22:18, 0] lib/util.c:smb_panic(1400) PANIC: internal error [2003/11/25 20:22:18, 0] lib/util.c:smb_panic(1407) BACKTRACE: 18 stack frames: #0 winbindd(smb_panic+0x11c) [0x80bcdfc] #1 winbindd [0x80ab952] #2 /lib/tls/libc.so.6 [0x420277b8] #3 /usr/lib/libldap.so.2(ldap_unbind_ext+0x2c) [0x40124bfc] #4 /usr/lib/libldap.so.2(ldap_unbind+0x65) [0x40124cd5] #5 winbindd(ads_destroy+0x1d8) [0x815c2e8] #6 winbindd [0x8081bbe] #7 winbindd [0x80756de] #8 winbindd [0x80758cc] #9 winbindd [0x807717d] #10 winbindd(winbindd_lookup_name_by_sid+0x65) [0x80732f5] #11 winbindd(winbindd_getgrgid+0x1dd) [0x807070d] #12 winbindd(strftime+0x139b) [0x806ca13] #13 winbindd(winbind_process_packet+0x21) [0x806cd01] #14 winbindd(strftime+0x1f2e) [0x806d5a6] #15 winbindd(main+0x3ed) [0x806dacd] #16 /lib/tls/libc.so.6(__libc_start_main+0xe4) [0x42015704] #17 winbindd(ldap_msgfree+0x79) [0x806c231] -----Original Message----- From: Andrew Bartlett [mailto:abartlet@samba.org] Sent: Saturday, 22 November 2003 11:05 AM To: ww m-pubsyssamba Cc: samba@lists.samba.org Subject: RE: [Samba] RE: winbindd panic daemon dies -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba

Hi Andrew, I don't think Sun provide and malloc debug libraries. On the linux box it is possible but, I'm not an experienced linux user, I'll need to source a machine for this, it'll take me a while, thanks Andy. -----Original Message----- From: Andrew Bartlett [mailto:abartlet@samba.org] Sent: 22 November 2003 00:05 To: ww m-pubsyssamba Cc: samba@lists.samba.org Subject: RE: [Samba] RE: winbindd panic daemon dies On Fri, 2003-11-21 at 21:27, ww m-pubsyssamba wrote:> Hi, please find attatched the back trace from my winbindd (samba 3.0.0) panic,Bugger - it's another malloc() related bug. That means that some free() call - sometime before this one, was misused. If you were running it on linux, I would suggest running winbind under valgrind, but there might be some other ways to help track this down: Are there any debugging malloc libraries for Solaris? Is it reasonable to try and setup a linux box in a matching setup? I now have a valgrind dump of a panic. There are several normal starts and stops as I am restarting winbind at 6:00 am every morning when the server syncs are stopped. I hope this helps Stephen Collier -----Original Message----- From: Andrew Bartlett [mailto:abartlet@samba.org] Sent: Wednesday, 26 November 2003 11:30 AM To: Stephen Collier Cc: 'samba@lists.samba.org' Subject: RE: [Samba] RE: winbindd panic daemon dies On Wed, 2003-11-26 at 11:18, Stephen Collier wrote:> I had the same problem last night using 3.0.0-1 on RH 9.
