Greetings ! First of all let me thank you for making Samba available. I am running Samba-1.9.16p11 on RedHat4.2 Linux. This is because the only Samba binary I could find that would run on SCO3.2v4.2, which is also on my LAN, was 1.9.16p11 and that same version was distributed with the RedHat. Linbox & Scobox are doing fine, so I don't want to get into any upgrade question until I resolve the problem which follows: Problem: Samba-1.9.17p2 is installed on FreeBSD2.2.5 [the included distribution] and I can ....... smbclient -L Scobox, ; from Bsdbox smbclient \\\\scobox\\share ; from Bsdbox smbclient -L Linbox ; from Bsdbox smbclient \\\\linbox\\share ; from Bsdbox without a problem. Also, all pings well. But, when I....... smbclient -L Bsdbox ; from the Bsdbox I get............ Your server software is being unfriendly ; which I resolved on Linbox & Scobox and............. lp_servicenumber: couldn't find homes lp_servicenumber: couldn't find printers I have read all 70 odd pages of the smb.conf docs that came with the Bsdbox, consulted dejanews, smb.protocol.misc and done miscellaneous web searches trying to get a handle on this. I failed. Help would be enthusiastically received. Gratitude to all, ccthomas@flash.net
Good day, I have installed samba 2.0.5 on an Intel based Solaris 7 system. For two days now I am trying to find some concise and precise documentation on 'how to configure samba'. Of course, my first stop was samba.org but did not find it very user friendly. Please help, Regards, //// (o o) ==============oOOo=(_)=oOOo============= Jean-Marc Beaudoin, T.P. V.I.P. Hi everyone, I am just learning SAMBA and do have a question. I am planning on installing SAMBA on a Older HP workstation that is running HP-UX version 10.20. A script is being several times a day on this HP machine that ftps into a remote computer and downloads data. I want to make this data available to the users on our our office LAN which are currently running Windows 98. All of the documentation says that SAMBA should be installed in /usr/local/samba. However, I want to make sure I have enough space available on /usr. When I run BDF, the output states the following for /usr: Filesystem kbytes used avail %used Mounted on 600571 396876 143637 73 /usr Should I have enough space on this drive or should I move to another one, such as /usr1? If I change the installation directory to /usr1, do I need to go in and change the installation function? Jeffrey Hovis -------------- next part -------------- A non-text attachment was scrubbed... Hi Jeffrey, get the Samba 2.2.3a binaries from http://hpux.connect.org.uk/hppd/hpux/Networking/Misc/samba-2.2.3a/ The installation path is /opt/samba and the package is in HP-UX SD Depot Format (use: gunzip and swinstall). You must have 22MB free space on /opt. Regards, Thomas -------------- next part -------------- HTML attachment scrubbed and removed
Hello! I have some question regarding the installation of Samba i a Spar Sun Solaris 8 machine. First alternative: 1) I start with the download of the file samba-latest.tar.gz. 2) The second step is > gunzip -vf samba-latest.tar.gz. 3) After that > tar -xvf samba-latest.tar. Att this point everything is OK. 4) Next step is > cd samba.2.2.4/source 5) the next step is >./configure . Thisis the step that does not work. I get thoses erros : loading cache ./config.cache checking for gcc... gcc checking whether the C compiler (gcc -O ) works... no configure: error: installation or configuration problem: C compiler cannot create executables. I seems tha I have some wrong configuration in my machine. Second Alternative: 1) Downloading of the file samba-2.2.4-sparc-solaris-2.8.pkg.gz. 2) > cp samba-2.2.4-sparc-solaris-2.8.pkg.gz samba-2.2.4-sparc-solaris-2.8.pkg 3) > pkgadd -d samba-2.2.4-sparc-solaris-2.8.pkg. All seems be installed. Untill now everything is Ok. And I start nmbd OK start smbd Not OK -----Why I can not start smbd? I appreciate your answers. BR /Daniel Rivera

I am a newbie in Linux and I wish to install Samba but Red hat looks so different from MS products that I have no idea how applications can be installed in Linux. i have downloaded the .tar.gz samba file but now I am stuck. How do i go about installing Samba? Titus,
Titus: If you are using Redhat, it would be much easier to install there latest rpm. However if you want the latest Samba, when you unzip the one you have, there will be instructions. It is usually in a file called INSTALL or something similar. Hope that helps. U must first unpack the tar.gz file. Use this from monitor window. tar -zxvf (your tar.gz file) cd to the samba dir ans cd to source.Type ./configure make make install Read both any README file and INSTALL as suggested by the other reader. U can see the options by typing ./configure --help To later mount a samba file system you should use this option ./configure --with-smbmount Check the syntaks. --- Stewart Thompson <stewart.thompson@shaw.ca> skrev:> Titus: > > If you are using Redhat, it would be much easier to > install there > latest rpm. Hi, first of all i am Samba beginner! I have this problem : Samba-2.2.7a is just runing on my Linux Server. I will now install the new Version of samba-2.2.28a When i do ./configure, make and make-> install->smbstatus I see that there is still old Version runing and not Samba-2.2.8a?!! My old samba is installed in /etc/samba and the new vesion is downloaded and installed ( i hope) in /usr/local/samba-2.2.8a thnks for your reply Henry
Hi Thomas, As i wrote that's still the old Version: /usr/local/samba-2.2.8a/bin/smbstatus --> samba version 2.2.7a-SUSE When i type "Which smbstatus" i get /usr/bin /smbstatus I dont know what you mean with : For startup the samba processes you should change your Startscript in "/etc/init.d/samba" where the other version is still started. Sorry, what should i do with /init.d/samba ? Thanks henry Hi, please try "/usr/local/samba-2.2.8a/bin/smbstatus" Might be, you have a standard installation on your system. Type "which smbstatus" and you will see which prgram are in your default path ($PATH variable) For startup the samba processes you should change your Startscript in "/etc/init.d/samba" where the other version is still started. - Thomas A.A wrote:> Hi,
