Is this an exclusively NT/XP/2K share or will it work with windows 9x as well? Kev

You will find Win 9x/Me driver downloads a little on the flakey side due to the high variability of the age and style of the drivers available. Drivers written for Win 98 SE and later generally work fine with the printer$ share. - John T. -- John H Terpstra Email: jht@samba.org

This is incorrect. The [print$] is simply a file share for storing drivers. The windows clients (all versions) query the print server for the driver location. So the [print$] share is used for Win9x & NT and later clients. Just like a Windows NT print server. And if you are saying that the win9x support is flakey due to drivers, then i might agree with you. But if you are saying that Samba support for 9x driver download is flakey I would have to disagree. Just clarifying things. cheers, jerry ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Hewlett-Packard ------------------------- http://www.hp.com SAMBA Team ---------------------- http://www.samba.org GnuPG Key ---- http://www.plainjoe.org/gpg_public.asc "You can never go home again, Oatman, but I guess you can shop there." --John Cusack - "Grosse Point Blank" (1997) -----BEGIN PGP SIGNATURE----- Version: GnuPG v1.2.0 (GNU/Linux) Comment: For info see http://quantumlab.net/pine_privacy_guard/ iD8DBQE+05n3IR7qMdg1EfYRAgQvAKCdNto/xFRC+AjPmPio/i7Cf6PCyACg0PoN XlOnaiugK8bdG47/uwSGvvQ=hX39 -----END PGP SIGNATURE-----

It is easy to resolve though, if you have an MS Windows 9x system that has file and print sharing enabled, in a DOS box just type: net view \\machine It will list either print$ or printer$ as one of the shares.> And if you are saying that the win9x support is flakey due to drivers,It is the early Windows 9x drivers that are flakey - NOT samba support for Windows 9x / Me drivers.> then i might agree with you. Just want to double check with the list that I, in theroy, have enough processing power. Let me list out some of my server information. 1) Will need to be able to sustain 400 concurrent logins (No roaming profiles) 2) Support 140 printing queues 3) Support NFS mounts from other servers and have its disks NFS mounted TO other servers 4) Act as PDC I was looking at going with a Dell Xeon 1.8 Processor box running RedHat Linux with 2 gig of Memory. The disk array is coming from another vendor, but it will be SCSI attached.
