Hi everyone! I've already deployed samba-2.2.7a-2 and enabled openLDAP support. I now have a machine configured as a domain controller authenticating all windows users via openLDAP. openLDAP is also authenticating all of our linux users. I would like to install Exchange2000 on a windows2000 machine so our windows users can do calendaring (sendmail already handles all of our email needs). I would like to keep our current authentication system in place but also allow our windows outlook users to do calendaring. will samba 3.0 (alpha, beta or final) make this possible? i found some text related to this in the alpha folder and under 3.0/WHATSNEWS.txt: "Active Directory support. This release is able to join a ADS realm as a member server and authenticate users using LDAP/kerberos. " does this mean that the actual windows machine running Active Directory will still be responsible for all authentication? Thanks! Ron McKown rmckown@envenergy.com

I would guess that exchange will use that userdb ...> > I would like to keep our current authentication system in place but also > allow our windows outlook users to do calendaring. > will samba 3.0 (alpha, beta or final) make this possible? > > i found some text related to this in the alpha folder and under > 3.0/WHATSNEWS.txt: > "Active Directory support. "don't use active directory unless you really need it. better yet don't use exchange - you'll be sorry. It's byzantine and they rape you on the licensing fees... Instead use a web groupware suite like phpgroupware like i do (which can use the ldap db for authentication) People like the outlook integration but I don't think it's worth the time or trouble. brad -- Bradley W. You'd have to move all your users to the AD domain controller and join the samba3 server to the domain or use winbind. If you can avoid using AD do so - it'll just suck you further into the microsoft stuff (which i assume you are trying to avoid with samba) Hopefully you can run exchange on a non AD domain... (in which case you can stick to released versions of samba) brad -- Bradley W. Langhorst <brad@langhorst.com>

I tried it out and thought it was crap :) I found Gordano much better and even Byrani. Other options are also Kroupware, RH-EMS and a few others. This is off topic though and has been discussed before on this list.
