My Samba PDC's were working perfectly with Win XP Pro clients until recent
updates were applied to the Samba servers (in this case, Mandrake 8.2,
Samba 2.2.3a-10.1mdk.i586.rpm) which indicated, "Updated samba packages fix
potential root compromise" (The 2.2.7 fix.)
The previous XP machine accounts continued to function perfectly, but
trying to add new XP machines to the domain would not work ("Access
Denied"
or "Your computer could not be joined to the domain because the following
error has occured: The account used is a computer account. Use your global
account or local user account to access this server.").
Trying to join these XP boxes did not work manually nor automagically with
the add user script line typically employed for this purpose (reg hack
being applied to these machines, of course, in both cases).
The only way I was able to get working machine accounts created for these
XP boxes was to uninstall the updated Samba RPMS and reinstalling the
original Samba packages that came with Mandrake 8.2 (2.2.3a-10). Then
joining the new XP boxes went as flawlessly as ever.
Is there some new way to join XP Pro machines to a Samba PDC under Samba
2.2.7a? I can't find anything on this via google, etc...
Thanks,
James Jensen
