samba - Aug 2002 - winbindd not creating local pipe file

This is Samba 2.2.5 on FreeBSD.  There is no pipe file under /tmp/.winbindd/, 
so wbinfo thinks that winbindd is not running.  "Winbindd -d 10" gives
the
following in the log file:

(NT_STATUS_DOMAIN_CONTROLLER_NOT_FOUND)

I think it is something I am doing wrong that causes this, but could not 
figure it out.  Can somebody point me to what I should look for?
