Various parts of Samba routinely reset the permissions on smb.conf to something they think is appropriate. As far as I can tell, this is not configurable. I like to maintain permissions on files separately, and for many systems Samba's choice is not the best. It wasn't very hard to modify the source code to remove this function, but I think it ought to be a regular installation option. But I know the issue of where control of security policy should be is the subject of holy wars, and it's obvious that someone went out of his way to put this unusual function into Samba, so I wonder if this is something that has been considered before. -- Bryan Henderson Phone 408-621-2000 San Jose, California
