samba - Jun 2002 - Samba Domain and Winbind

I have been using Samba for some time now and I'm getting a bit confused
with winbind....
In a network where there are only Samba/Linux Servers and W98 and W2K
workstations do we need winbind?
Is Samba+LDAP as PDC sufficient?
