Is there any way to prevent users from mapping drive letters to Samba shares? We are constantly getting user problems like: "I can't find my files on my F: drive. Please restore it". They expect us to know where their F: drive was mapped. We try to show users how to use UNCs and shortcuts, but I would like to prevent mapped drives. There is another reason to prevent them: Several of the viruses will run down through all the drives, real and mapped, and trash them. I would like to prevent that (yes, we have virus protection everywhere, but sometimes they get in before the vendors have a cure). -- Gary Algier, WB2FWZ gaa at ulticom.com +1 856 787 2758 Ulticom Inc., 1020 Briggs Rd, Mt. That is entirely a client side configuration option, you have to deny the users the ability to do that through the registry(profiles and policies made it pretty in nt 4), I don't remember how to do it off hand but start by looking at the M$ site for clues. Whether they mapped it or hit it through \\server\share is transparent to samba I believe Barry Johnson ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gary Algier" <gaa@ulticom.com> To: "Samba" <samba@lists.samba.org> Sent: Thursday, February 21, 2002 9:05 AM Subject: [Samba] Any way to prevent mapped drives?> Is there any way to prevent users from mapping drive letters to Samba > shares? > > We are constantly getting user problems like: "I can't find my files on > my F: drive. Because of this, most of our users have no idea that they *CAN* map a drive to a different letter. - john
It's probably worth noting that some software *requires* a mapped drive, too. -----Original Message----- From: Barry Johnson [mailto:originalskinnyj@hotmail.com] Sent: Thursday, February 21, 2002 11:42 AM To: Gary Algier; Samba Subject: Re: [Samba] Any way to prevent mapped drives?
