Hello,
The first thing I would suggest is to check freshmeat.net and see if there
is something comparable to astound out there for linux, therefore bypassing
the whole windows program need, bypassing the need for most pay-per-license
fees. As far as running a windows program under linux, you would need WINE,
vmware or some other win-emulator. Hope this advise helps some.

Subject: configuration question
I am a Firefighter and I am currently working on a project to educate the
public on Safety such as fire safety and evacuation procedures. I have come
up with a information program which is presented on a computer located in
strategic public places.
The education program is in a windows format call astound, The computer is
unattended and the program interacts with the public. I would like to use a
linux base OS because of its stability. I think Samba 2 may be my answer.
Question:
1 Can Samba run the astound program full screen with samba and linux
running in the background?
2 Will samba be able to run AVI, Mpeg and animated gif files
3.Can I configure the system so that when you turn on the computer
that the astound program startup automatically?
4.If these answer is possible which linux operating system should I
use and how would I go about in doing this?
Thank you for your time

Samba is made for emulating the Windows file sharing system. Not the
windows system itself. For your uses, I would suggest WINE or Win4Lin...
both are available and can be located easily by use of a search engine such
as google.com

It would take a whole lot of work to do what you want. And, you would have to run the program in an emulator, which would cost money anyway. I would stick with windows for this. I have learned if you have a windows program, it is better just to run it in windows. Joel

I am using Unix Open Server 5 and have a copy of Samba 1.9.18.p7 running on my Unix server. I am trying to install Samba 2.2.6 and I think I have it installed and configured but when I run "testparm" it looks at the old configuration file for Samba 1.9.18p7 which is located in /usr/local/samba/lib. The Samba 2.2.6 configuration file is located in /usr/lib/samba/lib. How do I get it to look at the new configuration file? In reading through the manual I noticed it talks about a command "smbcontrol" that you can use a -s option with to set the location of the configuration file but when I try to run "smbcontrol" it says "smbcontrol not found" and when I search for it I can't find it either. Where should I go from here?
