Can I use only samba-passwd for samba. I don't want to have smaba-users in /etc/passwd.
The samba users still need a unix user so unix file permissions can be enforced. What you can do, that would be pretty insecure and I don't really recommend, is have a general smbuser in /etc/passwd with no home dir or shell and in all your shares on the samba side "force user = smbuser". So everyone would effectively be reading/writing files as the same user. Jim Crilly Management Science Associates
