...T tries a couple of times to login to it, and after it fails it says its not there. This maybe a flaw in the way samba replies to that or the way NT reads it, I don't know. Can I use only samba-passwd for samba. I don't want to have smaba-users in /etc/passwd.

...be the problem because it ranges from several bytes to several megs. I am root on the linux box giving smbtar the admin acct/passwd and taring to a file not a tape device.
