I can easily switch off Samba with SWAT, but I am not able to start Samba with SWAT using the status panel. Is that correct or am I doing something wrong. I'm using Samba 2.0.0 and the SuSE 6.0 distribution. Thomas

Hello, I have a root-authorization-problem using swat with the netscape-browser on my DS20E-compaq-unix-server. First some configuration-items: I'am running UNIX on a compaq DS20E server. version: Oct 9 10:59:49 newnova vmunix: Digital UNIX V4.0F (Rev. 1229); Mon Oct 9 10:58:18 GMT+0100 2000 Netscape 4.5/Export, 13-Oct-98; (c) 1995-1998 Netscape Communications Corp. I compiled the samba version: samba-2.0.7 with the gcc-compiler: Reading specs from /usr/local/lib/gcc-lib/alphaev6-dec-osf4.0f/2.95.2/specs gcc version 2.95.2 19991024 (release) At the moment I'am testing the functionality of the samba-server but I have a problem with logging in to the swat-tool with the root-user. I got a message which says: Authorization failed. Retry ?. If a cancel this I get the next message: 401 Authorization Required You must be authenticated to use this service If I log on with a different unix user everything works fine. I made the necessarily changes to the /etc/services- and the /etc/inetd.conf-file: /etc/services: swat 901/tcp /etc/inetd.conf: swat stream tcp nowait root /usr/local/samba/bin/swat swat The strange thing is that when I change the user in the inetd.conf file to a different user than root, I can connect to swat as root with no problems. Samba is also running on an other server and there swat works fine also for root. I tried to find some differences between these servers but I can't find anything. Perhaps you can give me a clue ? With regards, Hugo Kelder
Hi, I rencently downloaded and installed Samba 2.2.0-Alpha1 on my SuSE 7.0 machine. The original version that came with the SuSE distribution was 2.0.7. I changed all paths to the binary folder of the new version and checked "services" and "inetd.conf" for correct entries. After that update Swat won't start anymore when I try to access via any browser. I changed the entries in the config files back to point to the old binaries but that version of Swat also doesn't start anymore. When I now look at "netstat -an | grep 901" I can see that Linux doesn't listen anymore to that port. Entries in "services" say something else. I have changed nothing else on my system except the things mentioned in the Swat manual. Another thing I should mention is that my new build binaries work. If I use webmin to access Samba, its .conf-File and Swat everything can be startet and accessed without any problem. It's just that somehow my Linux doesn't listen to the specific port. Can anybody help? Does the installation of the Pre-Release Version change any other Config-Files without my knowledge that can have this effect? Uli
I realize this question may have been asked many times before, but I'm REALLY new to samba, and can't get SWAT running on my machine. I'm using RedHat 7.1. All the tutorials I look at say to add some line to my xinetd.conf file. However that has been replaced by the new scripts. How do I get SWAT running now? Thanks Jeremy West
Jeremy, Goto /etc/xinetd.d/ and take a look swat file. Here is my: service swat { port = 901 socket_type = stream wait = no only_from = cheese user = root server = /usr/sbin/swat log_on_failure += USERID disable = no } I hope this help. Also don't forget to restart xinetd daemon. Do you have the option "Work Offline" selected in internet explorer? If so this will prevent you from accessing ANY website other than one hosted locally on that system. Un check it and try accessing swat again. -----Original Message----- From: samba-bounces+gmiller=eccbm.com@lists.samba.org [mailto:samba-bounces+gmiller=eccbm.com@lists.samba.org] On Behalf Of sathya kuppa Sent: Thursday, March 27, 2003 11:53 AM To: samba@lists.samba.org Subject: [Samba] SWAT problem dear all, I am able to run the GUI SWAT in my host (RedHat8.0) and other elements in the network(of different os) when the connection to internet is available. Why don't you try to install webmin??, It is very easy to install, check if Swat and Samba start when you restar you linux box ( check you xined.d), if they do, download webmin and install it ( tar.....etc, then ./configure, then make, then, make install ), once It was installed get into http://yourlinuxIP:10000. example: http://10.2.23.1:10000 there you will see samba module, inside this You will be able to get into swat. Fortunately, a simple link (ln -fvs <original> <link>) was needed. The following "netstat -pant | egrep -ie swat" will show swat operational on the server side after you activate /etc/rc.d/init.d/xinetd restart. -- Note: When you reply to this message, please include the mailing list address and my email address in To: and/or Cc: with any proper combination ********************************************************************* Signed, SoloCDM -- To unsubscribe from this list go to the following URL and read the instructions: http://lists.samba.org/mailman/listinfo/samba _____ This message is intended for the use of the addressee and may contain information that is privileged and/or confidential.
