samba - Aug 1998 - Tape Backup Using Samba

Greetings !

Using Samba-1.9.16p11 on RedHat4.2 Linux as tape server, and backing up
SCO3.2v4.2 running Samba-1.9.16p11, 

when I.......
	smbclient \\\\scobox\\share -TcX /dev/st0 dev cdrom floppy proc

After a sustained successful partial backup, 

I get.............
	Expected SMBtrans2 response,
	got command 0x00
	Segmentation fault, core dumped

This seems to occur at about the same point in the backup and with
different and new tapes. I'm using an Exabyte 8500 [native 5 gig] tape
machine. I am able to successfully do a tar backup from the server [of
itself] without difficulty, so I don't think it's the tape drive. The
machine backing up is a 133 mhz AMD K5 and the machine being backed up
is a 100 mhz, AMD K5 too.

Backing up a FreeBSD machine [running Samba-1.9.17p2] with the same
apparatus, the backup will run to completion but getting myriad errors
of the type...........

	Error writing local file
	Didn't get entire file
	Padding with <so many> zeros

That NT machine is obviously running Service Pack 3, which refuses to connect to
servers which do not support password
encryption.

There are two solutions:

1) enable SMB password encryption in Samba. See ENCRYPTION.txt in the Samba
docs.

2) disable this behaviour in NT (so it will accept cleartext passwords). This is
done by inserting a certain key in the
registry. See WinNT.txt in the Samba docs.
