Rails - Nov 2006 - "Rails Cookbook" - is it possible to get PDF version somewhere???

Hi,

Anyone know whether there''s somewhere I can purchase a PDF version of
Rails
Cookbook <http://www.oreilly.com/catalog/railsckbk/>?  (doesn''t
seem to be
an option for this on the O''Reilly site)

It''s not been published yet, but you can buy ''Rough
Cuts'' access to the
work-in-progress via the Safari library:

You can download Rough Cuts books as a PDF once you''ve bought access.

However, normal books in the Safari library aren''t easily downloadable
as PDFs*. You have to read them online in your web browser. So I''m not
sure what will happen to this book once it''s finished.

or sections of certain books in PDF format. But there''s no way to just

I just struggled and FINALLY was able to purchase and download the Rough
Cuts PDF of Rails Cookbook.
Unfortunately, and I think O''Reilly sucks (for a number of reasons)
pardon
my language, you do need to purchase the safari online access in order to be
able to buy the Rough Cuts.  Whereas there is the RJS Templates and Web
Services PDF from them, and those do not require online access.  Whatever.
Right now it''s about 560 pages I believe, updated last on 10/28.  I
love the
Ruby Cookbook, same author I believe, so it should make a great resource.

Rough Cuts use the same interface as Safari, but you don''t need to
have a full Safari account to use them.

how much was it then overall to get the PDF guys? (i.e. Safari access + PDF
purchase = ??)

non-DRM
pdf''s of their books, the same way the Prags do.  If I want a pdf, I
want it to be full unprotected so I can use it on my laptop when I
have no connectivity.  And I don''t want to have to subscribe to a
service or try to hack around with download tokens to do it.

As it stands now, if I want an O''Reilly book now I usually just get
the paper version from Amazon as its always cheaper and I don''t want
to waste time with Safari.  If O''Reilly offered combo packs with the
paper + pdf versions, I would probably by direct from them.

If you''ve never been a member of Safari, you can get a trial
subscription at
no charge, I think it''s a few months.
You''ll need to supply a credit card though.
At that point you could purchase the Rough Cuts Rails Cookbook for $20

If you''ve had previous membership to Safari , like I, then I went with
a
base membership of 9.99 a month.

As I understand it a PDF version of this book will be available from
O''Reilly when it is released,
just as they released the Ruby cookbook on PDF when it was released.

I bought the Ruby Cookbook as soon as it was released, it is not DRM protected
so I have a copy on
my workstation and my laptop, just as I do with the prag progs books.

I "bumped" into the author at RailsCamp on Thursday, he said he was
still proofreading it, so I
don''t think it has actually been released yet. He did say it would be
available as a PDF though when
it was released, maybe there will be a slight delay between the paper book and
PDF though I couldn''t
say.

I definitely think it will be worth getting in addition to Rails Recipes (I have
that one too), as I
believe it has far more "recipes" in it (YMMV ;)
