Hi, I would like to see Internet Explorer loose market share. I will be adding a banner like the one on explorerdestroyer.com to my shiny new Mephisto blog very soon. I think it would be very cool if Rails developers jumped on this bandwagon and added the banner to entire web sites, login pages or registration pages. Nothing wrong with encouraging open source software! :) http://explorerdestroyer.com http://killbillsbrowser.com http://browsehappy.com/ http://www.spreadfirefox.com/ The exploredestroyer.com banner''s HTML/CSS/JavaScript is not really that great. I''m rewriting it and if anyone would like a copy I can post it here when I am finished. And if you manage to convince 1 million visitors to do that, you''ll be a rich man. Keep up the noble, err, good work. Nothing wrong with encouraging open > source software! :)Indeed, nothing wrong with encouraging open source software. But there may be wrong ways to do it. My opinion is, that interrupting user with banners like those on explorerdestroyer.com, or even worse - denying access to site hurts more than helps. What are those "IE incompatible" sites? Sure, IE does not have the level of web standards support FF, Opera or Safari have, but it''s support is good enough. What is the message to the user? "Hey, you are stupid and not worthy?". This is rude and wrong. Do you know the reason why one uses IE? Maybe they have no choice at the moment (corporate environments, public access terminals, etc.). Will those banners help them to switch, or just interrupt their workflow and make them angry? Is anger good thing with assocciation with Firefox? I am all for increase of Firefox market share. But I am also for "device independent access". Maybe some still miss "best viewed with ..." times, I do not. For some sites it is fine. Many sites on the web have banners so I don''t think it is a big interuption. A banner promoting Firefox does not need to be shown to users of good browsers so the explorer destroyer idea of only showing to IE is a good idea, in my opinion.
