Hola! In case there are some mexican readers here... It is little difficult for an english speaker to find information about mexican domains. Is it possible to register a domain like "fiesta.mx"? I have seen sites selling ".com.mx" and similar but not just ".mx". Thanks, Peter

Although there are some lucky people who got their hands on .mx domains on the early days, the nic.mx registrar is no longer accepting just .mx domain names You have to buy .com.mx or .org.mx or whatever. I''m based in Mexico, feel free to contact me if you need help. Peter Michaux wrote:> I can''t find anything about just .mxHi, Peter, hi list. First post here, and it had to be off-topic :-/ But here''s your Mexican reader :-) There are in fact domains like that (say, unam.mx, itesm.mx), but those were registered a long time ago, and NIC.MX policies have changed. See Q.2 from their domain FAQ at http://www.nic.mx/es/FAQ.Dominios. Don''t know if there''s a translation (used to be, can''t find it now), so I''ll translate for you: Can I register domains directly under .mx? No, since March 1997 it is no longer possible to register domain names directly under .mx. Prior to that date such domains were given to educational institutions, but in November 1996, .edu.mx was added. From that point on we stopped registering domains directly under .mx. So there. I''ll also add that, in my experience, registering a .com.mx is very straightforward, but anything else requires paperwork. NIC.mx for some (annoying) reason requires you to demonstrate that you are a non-profit institution before assigning you a .org.mx, a network provider for .net.mx, and a school for .edu.mx. This may have changed recently, YMMV. Salud. -CR C?sar Rinc?n Guadalajara, M?xico http://mengambrea.blogspot.com/
Thanks for the information. Strange policies but if that is the way it is, then that is the way it is. Sure does make for some ugly urls though.
