I''m in the market for some Apple products these days, and this will be my first time ever buying Apple. I''m looking to pick up a 15in Powerbook, 12in iBook, and 2 nano''s. Obviously the prices are much higher than I am used to, but understandably. I have heard you can get some 25% discounts and such, so I''m just wondering if anyone knows about that? Or maybe someone works at an Apple store near me. I''m in the SF Bay Area. If anyone is willing to help, please let me know! I cant wait to get with the program and do away with Windows! Joe Noon
AFAIK, Amazon gives the best discounts due to some rebates they offer. Unless you''re a student, in which case you can often get some awesome deals on campus. Not only students, but faculty and staff of schools. Ask around. You might know someone who works at a college or university. Get ''em to flash an ID at the Apple store and it''s instant discount time. But, that said, if you can possibly wait, I would wait until the Intel based machines come out. Obviously software vendors will continue to support PPC for awhile, but how long? Especially the little guys.. The Intel laptops should be faster, thinner, and might have better battery life. They SHOULD be cheaper too - but they won''t be. Should be less than a year now. If that''s too long, then go for it - but maybe spend accordingly. For example, there might some good deals on eBay. My situation, I have a Mini with 1GB. At this point I think it''ll hold me over. Though my spending fingers do get rather twitchy looking at the Powerbooks. --Steve
While I see the argument for waiting, Apple doesn''t always have the best track record for v1 of its new hardware offerings and I would suspect that will be even more true for the first round of Intel machines. I think buying a Mac right now is a tough decision for that reason, balancing against the upcoming Intel machines. I''d probably get a PPC now and then get in on the second round of Intel machines in 2 years once the bugs are out.> From: Stephen Waits <steve-g8GSkY9QmIteoWH0uzbU5w@public.gmane.org> > Reply-To: <rails-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org> > Date: Sun, 6 Nov 2005 20:17:13 -0800 > To: <rails-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org> > Subject: Re: [Rails] [OT] Apple buying help > > > On Nov 6, 2005, at 5:32 PM, Joe Noon wrote: > >> I''m looking to pick up a 15in >> Powerbook, 12in iBook, and 2 nano''s. > > Yah, as Duane said, Amazon, or Education pricing is the way to go. > > But, that said, if you can possibly wait, I would wait until the > Intel based machines come out. -----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 There''s also been some noise (not sure what percentage of it is speculation) that the first round of Intel based machines will be desktops, not replacements for the powerbook and ibook lines. As for supporting people out there supporting both PPC and Intel based macintosh - don''t worry about it. The dev kits that people use to produce Mac software are quite happy producing both intel and ppc binaries in one compile, without any changes required, and there is support for a universal disk image format as well for shipping. If your heart is set on a Mac, then go ahead and get one now. Although, as someone else pointed out a cheap PC clone notebook/ desktop running Linux is also a great option.
