Rails mailinglist summary anyone?
Hi all, I have this problem (oh, I actually have more than one, but one in particular that I''d like to share at the time being :-) ). I''m interested in RoR (as in played with it for a couple of hours, ordered the book and generally try to keep up to date), but I''m not actively developing anything for RoR. I''ve been subscribing to this mailinglist for a few weeks and find it really interesting. However, since I''m not actively developing it''s currently too high-volume for me. Ruby Weekly News (http://www.rubyweeklynews.org/) is a great summary of the ruby-talk/comp.lang.ruby, and Python-URL! (http://www.ddj.com/topic/pythonurl/) is the same thing but for comp.lang.python. They are great for lurkers like me! So basically what I''m looking for is the corresponding thing for this mailinglist. Is there such a thing that I''ve missed? If not, if anyone feels that it would be an interesting thing to do I would really appreciate it :-) Thanks in advance, Jonas

I did some checking with Zack Brown of Kernel Traffic about how he handles summarizing the linux-kernel mailing list. He''s got a nice system in place, but it''s all based on XML/XSLT and individual text files. The one thing Zack brings to this is over six years of summarizing one of the highest volume technical mailing lists in existence. He certainly understands what''s important and what''s not in terms of tracking this stuff. I looked at his system and started setting it up for this rails list. However, I couldn''t help but think it should be developed in Rails as a web app. I''ve done a little hacking on it at the model layer. I''ve also talked with Zack about the requirements for a web app to track summaries of a mailing list. I think I''ve got a good handle on what needs to be done. Ultimately, code talks louder than words. So, I''ll shut up now and go back to coding. I''ll follow up here when I actually have something to show. -- doug-jGAhs73c5XxeoWH0uzbU5w@public.gmane.org

Re: Rails mailinglist summary anyone?
Thanks Doug for responding! It''s one of those things where those who have the need lack the knowledge/time, and those who have the knowledge/time lack the need. I hope you''ll have something to show in the future :-) /Jonas (jonas.b-7XRkppT4KCs@public.gmane.org) --- doug-jGAhs73c5XxeoWH0uzbU5w@public.gmane.org wrote: jonasb.12671723-opCBI309nnGakBO8gow8eQ@public.gmane.org writes:> I didn''t want to volunteer without actually having something toshow,> but I also didn''t want to let this lie.

It will be very blog like. Something like a highly structured blog. We want to track who''s active in what threads. I encourage you to take a look at http://www.kernel-traffic.org/kernel-traffic/latest.html. Zack''s tracking who said what in which threads. So you can search by people to see what threads they''ve participated in and cross-reference those.> Also, If his system works as is and gets the job done, why redo it > in Rails? There''s two reasons to redo it in rails. First, eat your own dog food. Assuming this works well, I''d want it to live on the rubyonrails.com domain. It''d be a shame to use PHP (for instance; there''s no PHP in Zack''s publishing system) on the rubyonrails.com domain. Second, for me to do this on a regular basis I''m going to need help. AFAIK, Zack pretty much does it all himself for kernel traffic. I think a limiting factor would be to ask people to hand-code XML files for inclusion in the summary. Having a web app may make it easier for people to contribute. Plus I can fairly easily validate the input on a web form and provide immediate feedback rather than getting their XML file via email or something and then kicking it back when there''s errors. Finally, Zack says his system takes almost a full day of effort. I''m sure some of that effort is in the care and feeding of his system. He and I both agree that it could be easier to manage as a web app. In fact, if this works out he said he might consider switching. Again, less talk and more code... -- doug-jGAhs73c5XxeoWH0uzbU5w@public.gmane.org
Hello, My studio, Iridesco, Inc, a NYC design and technology studio is looking for a Ruby on Rails developer to collaborate on some challenging and fun projects. We don’t expect a seasoned person in Rails, but we’re looking for somebody who is experienced in at least one other programming language (something beyond a scripting language would be nice) and writes neat, readable and sensible code. Also, we''d like to work with people who are honest, open-minded, responsible and have good manners. Work arrangement is flexible – though we would like at least 20 hours a week from the person. More about us: the company is three years old and our site is not done yet because we’ve been kinda busy. One of us is obsessed with bicycles while the other likes to play with paper but feels guilty because of the dead trees. We''re pretty laid back, but very serious about our work. If you''re interested, let''s talk more. Some info we''d need from you (can be a resume, if you prefer): 1. who are you? 2. where are you? and if you''re near nyc, would you be able to come in to our studio and work? 3. what is your experience in programming and ruby on rails? 4. what are you looking for in our collaboration? 5. what are your interests/passions? 6. what''s your choice of editor (for programming)? 7. what''s the last book you read (other than Agile Web Development with Rails)? 8. what else would you like for us to know about you, or of anything in particular? Please write to work-7cySF2G8uHRWk0Htik3J/w@public.gmane.org That''s all. Thanks very much for your time. -- Shawn Liu / Iridesco, Inc. / 212.226.4160 / 212.226.4161 fax
