Hi, What do you think is the best web host for rails apps? I''ve given up trying to run a rails app on 1&1 and am now planning on signing up with another host. I looked at these two pages, http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/show/RailsWebHosts and http://jonte.nu/article/70/ruby-on-rails-hosting, and though informative, what I was really hoping for was a rating. Since there isn''t something like that I would love to hear this community''s recommendations. Thanks, Frank

Well I appreciate your cutting off my thread but maybe I should have been more specific. The posts I read mostly talk about TextDrive with some discussion about Dreamhost and a little about Planet Argon. I was hoping to hear more about people''s experiences on other hosts such as Site5, GeekISP, etc. On 7/20/05, Rick Olson <technoweenie-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org> wrote:> On 7/20/05, Frank Kim <mtmusko-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org> wrote: > > Hi, > > > > What do you think is the best web host for rails apps? > > > > I''ve given up trying to run a rails app on 1&1 and am now planning on > > signing up with another host. > > > > I looked at these two pages, > > http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/show/RailsWebHosts and > > http://jonte.nu/article/70/ruby-on-rails-hosting, and though > > informative, what I was really hoping for was a rating. > > > > Since there isn''t something like that I would love to hear this > > community''s recommendations. > > In the interest of keeping that can of worms closed, I''m going to > point you to this: > > http://search.gmane.org/search.php?query=rails+hosting&group=gmane.comp.lang.ruby.rails&sort=date > > > -- > rick > http://techno-weenie.net >
I''ve been testing out Site5.com for about a week now. The support team at site5 is amazing, most requests I had were handled in a matter of minutes. You also get a ton of space and bandwidth for a really low price and the ability to host multiple domain names. I am using the $16.95/month(yearly price) plan which gives me 12 Gigs of space and 150GB transfer. My only complaint is they currently don''t have fastcgi support. If you are going to be hosting a production rails application right away, I would wait until they announce fastcgi support. Which they are working on. -- Joe Clarke On 7/20/05, Frank Kim <mtmusko-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org> wrote:> Well I appreciate your cutting off my thread but maybe I should have > been more specific. > > The posts I read mostly talk about TextDrive with some discussion > about Dreamhost and a little about Planet Argon. Hi, In case anyone was wondering I ended up using Dreamhost as my choice for hosting my Ruby on Rails website. There are several reason. 1. Dreamhost in general has gotten excellent reviews from the community 2. it has a large user community 3. their prices are quite reasonable 4. I like their one button installs for applications like WordPress 5. they had a promotion that allowed me to purchase 1 year of hosting for three domains and one free domain name for only $0.77 per month I was seriously considering Site5 but the Dreamhost promotion won me over. In the future I will probably try out TextDrive also. I am concerned about some of the discussion about problems with FastCGI on Dreamhost. I was trying to host a Ruby app on 1and1 but I couldn''t get it to work. Plus 1and1 in general is just horrible. If you are interested in using Dreamhost yourself, you can go to http://www.dreamhost.com/rewards.cgi?seonghuhn. Sign up for one year and use the promotion code AJAX and you''ll get $50 credit (I get $47 as a referral fee and you save $50). -Frank On 7/20/05, Frank Kim <mtmusko-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org> wrote:> Hi, > > What do you think is the best web host for rails apps? > > I''ve given up trying to run a rails app on 1&1 and am now planning on > signing up with another host. > > I looked at these two pages, > http://wiki.rubyonrails.com/rails/show/RailsWebHosts and > http://jonte.nu/article/70/ruby-on-rails-hosting, and though > informative, what I was really hoping for was a rating. > > Since there isn''t something like that I would love to hear this > community''s recommendations. > > Thanks, > Frank >
