Hi, I am just curious, what platform are you using for Rails development ( XP?, OSX?, Linux(vi?)?, Solaris? ) I find myself using most of the time Scite (Scintilla based editor) when working on Windows. K.

For Windows I found Crimson Editor (Freeware) to be my favorite. And being non-Java it loads very fast and is very responsive. Crimson Editor has: Tree view of folders/files. Projects. Syntax highlighting. A co-worker has created a .rhtml syntax highlighter available upon request. Development - Win 2003 on Thinkpad with Apache 2, FastCGI, MySQL / PostgreSQL / SQL Server, SVN, no Cygwin (installed but none of the above are sitting on top of it) - Mac mini with Apache, Lighttpd, MySQL, PostgreSQL, SVN Production - Win 2003 with Apache 2, SQL Server - TextDrive (FreeBSD) with Lighttpd and Apache, MySQL Editors - TextMate on OSX. Aside from the command-only editors this one is peerless. - Eclipse with Ruby IDE for Windows. It''s heavy but I like it better than Scite and FreeRIDE. I played with jEdit but not long enough to have a strong opinion about it. Usage/Preferences - Currently I build most of my apps on my Thinkpad networked to my Mac Mini. I have the databases, web server and apps on the Thinkpad, and I actually VNC into the Mac mini from the Thinkpad (giving me it''s beautiful 1600x1200 LCD and killer keyboard) so I can pretend I have a powerbook, and edit through TextMate via a drive networked back to the Thinkpad. The video lag from VNC is negligible and TextMate is leagues beyond Eclipse. When the mactel powerbooks come out I''ll be the first in line. - I eventually will be building apps directly on the Mini (database, web server, SVN) but haven''t had the time to set it all up nicely. - I deploy to both Windows and FreeBSD. I use Windows for my core ongoing clients and FreeBSD for ''launch and leave'' sites. I have a colocated Windows box with SQL Server and I built some Rails apps that connect to legacy DBs. For fresh no-legacy apps I am teaching myself PostgreSQL since <diplomacy> it''s arguably a better choice for certain types of applications</diplomacy> but have been deploying sites through MySQL. I''m still feeling out what works best, as you can see, but I suspect I''ll be settling on a *nix/postgresql/lighty combo, probably buying a co-located box soon. If anyone''s interested, I hacked together a .rhtml syntax definition file for the latter (nothing fancy, just welded parts of the preexisting ruby and php syntax files together) and it has worked flawlessly for me: http://samuelk.info/articles/2005/06/02/an-erb-syntax-definition-for- kdevelop Deployment: OS X or OpenBSD.
