hey, i know it''s not really rails specific but i would be interested how to promote a new (rails) application. i talked about that yesterday on the irc channel and got some nice suggestions. - post to your blog (i did that, but i don''t think that there is really someone who reads my blog) - make an entry to the ruby on rails - real world usage wiki page (did that yesterday) - add the sites url to google (also did thet yesterday) so now i thought hey...that can''t be everything ... i mean ... how do you experts promote your sites? what are the tips and tricks ... or is it only possible to really promote if you already have a name in web building business? my new rails application is http://feedication.com - a sort of personal feed aggregation service, that collects information of your flickr, 43things, audioscrobbler and del.icio.us accounts. i am also planning to add upcoming.org syndication support... alright i would really be interested in ways to promote a website... for example is flyer promotion on the street a useful way? or does it really just depend on the kind of website to see whats the best way for promoting it....i ask because i''m a poor student who can''t really afford a marketing campaign for my private hobby projects. cheers, thomas

Go to http://www.seochat.com and read how do SEO. 2. Use those SEO Tools (find your competition, choose your keywords and so on.) 3. This one will work provided you have a couple of sites where you can place ads Sign-up to http://link-vault.com and start promoting your site. Currently Link-Vault doesn''t have RoR interface but it is simple to write one yourself (only if you want to place ads on RoR sites) 4. Exchange links, add valuable content, and most importantly make your website something unique, this way it will be spotted anyway in a couple of months -- Best Karol Hosiawa

Not to say you should start spamming mailing lists, of course, but having the URL in your signature is generally considered okay. :) With a tagline like "Aggregation for Flickr, 43 Things, AudioScrobbler, and del.icio.us" I''m not sure how you could go wrong.> thomasSincerely, Tom Reinhart tom-V0YqjHVuocLQT0dZR+AlfA@public.gmane.org http://AllTom.com/
Encourage people to del.icio.us bookmark your site. If it hits the popular page there, it could take off. For more background, read _The Tipping Point_, by Malcom Gladwell. :-) Cheers, Jim
That''s a great idea, Jim. I have added this app to del.icio.us tagged as ''rails'' and ''web2.0''. --- Jim Van Fleet <jim-HW8W3q4hXPgyx5EpGhof3g@public.gmane.org> wrote:> Encourage people to del.icio.us bookmark your site. > If it hits the > popular page there, it could take off. > > For more background, read _The Tipping Point_, by > Malcom Gladwell. :-) > > Cheers, > > Jim > _______________________________________________ > Rails mailing list > Rails-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org > http://lists.rubyonrails.org/mailman/listinfo/rails >
Hey this email worked for me.. I just signed up and added flickr and del.icio.us <http://del.icio.us> to it. Interesting idea and has potential, but there definitely something missing from the application to make it take off and be very popular. But I''m sure that "something" will come in due time. Re: new rails application - how to promote it?
It actually doesn''t take much to make it onto del.icio.us/popular -- 10 people will often do it. And a lot of influential people keep their eyes on del.icio.us/popular (e.g. Lifehacker, Robin Good, etc.) --- rails-1W37MKcQCpIf0INCOvqR/iCwEArCW2h5@public.gmane.org wrote: Encourage people to del.icio.us bookmark your site.
