Rails - May 2005 - many to many association with non SQL data source

I wonder if anyone as any good ideas about how I could implement a
many- to-many association where one end of the association is in a
MySQL database and the other end is not represented in a database at
all (and cannot be).

I understand that ActiveRecord doesn''t support this natively, but
I''d
be happy for even an idea about how to go about a reasonable hack.
