R help - Apr 2014 - Getting rid of spaces in plot math

I am trying to label a graphic:
	Cortisol (?g/ml)
A simplified version of the code is:
	plot(1) ; mtext(bquote("Cortisol ("~mu~"g/ml)"))
This code inserts spaces around the mu:
	Cortisol ( ? g/ml)
How can I suppress those spaces?
