R help - Feb 2014 - ggplot: choropleth map with polygons that have holes

I am encountering a problem using *geom_polygon(., fill=.)* with a dataframe
created using fortify(map) *if the polygon has holes*.
It appears that fill=.  ignores the holes - -eg. fills them as if they are not
present. geom_path(.) on the other hand does
recognize the boundaries of the holes.

 

I've been assuming that there's something wrong with my code, but asked
this question on SO here:

I am wondering now if it is a bug in ggplot?? I
have also encountered the problem here:

used. Any help would be appreciated, as this is a really major problem for me in
