I suggest you buy Therneau and Gramsch: "Modeling Survival Data: Extending the Cox Model". Early in the book the connections of counting process theory to survival analysis are outlined and often referenced as topics are developed. If your book budget is really flush, then also Klein and Meoschberger: "Survival Analysis". You should offer an informative subject line in any future postings to R help.
