R help - Apr 2011 - Image as a vector of values

hi:)
An image may be viewed as a vector of pixels where the value of each entry
in the vector
is the grayscale value of the corresponding pixel. 
How can I do this using R project?

image (graphics) or color2D.matplot (plotrix)

Or, if the question is meant the other way round, see package pixmap.
