R help - Jun 2009 - Significance asterisk in a bar plot

If I understand correctly, you can try something about like this:

x <- c(1, 4, 5, 10)
bp <- barplot(x, ylim = c(0, max(x) + 2))
text(bp, x,
     labels = symnum(x, cutpoints = c(1, 5, 10),
     symbols = c("*", "**")), pos = 3)

Bar plots are dreadful ways to present information (see 
http://biostat.mc.vanderbilt.edu/DynamitePlots).  Don't make them worse 
by adding arbitrary declarations of 'significance.'  Show asymmetric 
two-sided confidence intervals.
